I have tried to upgrade my Toshiba Laptop to Win XP Pro. Early on in the install process, I get a message stating that my DVD driver is not recognized by Windows XP and may not work after setup. I tried to complete setup anyway. I get messages that lots of files are missing and the second time I tried I got different files missing. I have checked and the files are on the CD to install.

I have checked my DVD/CD drivers and it sure looks like it is using a driver that is digitally signed by Micorsoft Windows Publishers. So I have no idea why I get the message early on. My DVD/CD is a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2512. Could that be the problem? Is there something else that might be the issue? (one suggestion was to clean the CD and it is clean.)

I could really use some help becuase now I am missing files, icons, quick launch on my task bar. They are there, but hidden and I cannot unhide them.

    Some of the files missing:
    IEDW.EX_
    POLICMAN.DL_
    RAWXML.XS_
    WMIC.EX_
    XLM.XS_
    XSLMAP.XS_

Uninstall any cd or dvd writing software that you have and try again.

I have not installed any drivers on my laptop for the DVD/CD. Everything is what came on it from the Manufaturer. According to the device manager, there is only one DVD/CD-ROM device. I assume that it only uses one driver at a time. When I look at the details, there are lots of dll's. Some are digitally signed, others are not. So do I really need to uninstall anything?

But see, thats not what I said.

Uninstall any cd/dvd writing software. Look in add/remove programs.

The fact that you see unsigned drivers in the details show that there is indeed burning software on the machine.

Go to start > run >
and copy and paste this in the run line and put your xp
disk in the drive and windows will repair any files
    that are messed up >

    sfc /scannow

Those _ files are compressed files from the upgrade CD, not the OS itself. Its either drivers affecting the cd/dvd drive, a bad cd, or possibly an incompatible drive, which is unlikely.

sfc /scannow will work with the XP Pro upgrade disk.

Ok, I did as you guys suggested and I am down to the 4 digital signature drivers for the DVD/CD device. I still get the error on the DVD-RAM, but now things are much worse. XP tries to do setup, but gets to a point where "asms" cannot be found. There is a path to "asms" as a folder, but no "asms" file. I click cancel, setup says there was a sever error and quites. The laptop immediately restarts and setup goes to the exact same place. I have tried typing the CD drive and the path in serveral forms and it still wont work.

I was under the impression that you actually had XP running at one point....
If not then I misunderstood. But all hope is not lost.
Give the 6 floppy setup disk trick a shot. Maybe something that
is missing will be part of the 6 floppys? It's worth a try, I think.
Just load the 6 floppys like you would for an old Win 98 setup
    and follow the prompts.
You can find them at Microsoft's website:

That would work if my laptop had a floppy drive. It doesn't. Seems all hope is lost.

I was going to suggest you start from scratch and install the first os,
and then Xp on top of the fresh install but then I realized you never
mentioned what the base os was. You can't just put XP Pro over
    anything you know.
(and nevermind the 6 floppies anyway, as I don't think
that would have worked for an upgrade.... :( )

I wouldn't give up yet though. There's a lot of pros that
check in here. Somebody will know of a fix.

(is it possible your upgrade disk is bad?)

I figured I would try a local shop that does repair and such, unless someone gives me a better idea.

You never mentioned what your original os was. Do you still have the disc?
If you do, you could just do a fresh install of the base os, and
then install the XP uprgrade on top of it. Kind of a lot of work, but
    should work perfectly.

The origianl OS was Windows XP Home. I want to do some web development and need IIS, which means that I need XP Pro.

O.K., I see. But do you have the original disk?
Because Pro should be a snap over the top of home edition
    if you do.

You said DVD-RAM. Are you using an authentic XP pro disk? Or are you using a burned copy of said XP pro?

Are you posting from the laptop itself? Or another computer? Typically most errors that come up during an upgrade are those when WMP10 are installed, or you have any ROXIO software installed.

What actuall errors are you getting? Are you getting files not found? With a windows that appears for you to search particular drivers?

I am using an authentic XP Pro CD. I am using the Laptop itself.

One of your comments about ROXIO software rings a bell. I do have something installed with ROXIO.

Roxio has caused many problems with me. Uninstalling this, removing this, has helped me in the past.

Can you reply to my other questions that I've posted above? :) i'm merely here to serve you ;)
