Interesting pic. If this is your backyard, I'm feeling envious.

I see deer sometimes in the park near my flat. They also appear at the Cammo Estate near Corstorphine Hill.

Hey Tim, I didn't think turkeys were so tall. Is this a different breed? Great pic.......is it from down your yard?

This is the type we have here in Aus and it is a lot closer to the ground or has shorter legs....

When you go about something cold turkey, that means you're uncertain as to whether you should do it.

Yes it is. They come to the edge of the woods which is about 20 feet from our living room windows. So far, we have counted 9 including 2 fawns.
Maybe. It is a wild turkey. Pretty much like this: wild-turkey-1448383.jpg

    Hey Tim
I was reading up on turkeys.
Turns out they are only native to North America although now they are bred all over the world. There are two native species being the North American Wild Turkey and the Central American Ocellated Turkey. The reason the ones in Australia look different is because they are a hybrid that has been bred for rapid growth with more flesh on the carcass.
Looks like your turkey is a North American wild turkey and I consulted the authority on the subject......one of my bottles of bourbon.......Wild Turkey Rare Breed......hmmm 4pm I might have a nip.....or two lol :D:cool:

It's funny this topic should be here. One about wildlife.

Lately, I felt like going for a walk. I get bored. So I went to the River Esk near Musselburgh and then the Brunstane Burn walkway. If you know Edinburgh, you may know the spots I'm talking about. There's a lot of pleasant paths in the city.

My sister used to work at Gorgie Farm as a volunteer, and I'm sure they had a turkey. They had chickens. She said she misses it.

Hmmmm....we don't have roaming turkeys around our woods. We have tons of deer and a mangy :( fox.

A family of groundhogs lives under our shed. Yesterday, they decided my chrysanthemums were a salad bar! I was not happy. I salvaged two of the three plants and hung them up.

That's cruel!!!! Replant your chrysanthemums and cut down the ground hogs!! ( Wink, wink )

Oh we tried. We had a company to trap the groundhogs. For close to $300 we got 1 groundhog, 1 racoon and 1 muskrat. We stopped the contract before we caught a skunk! So there are still 2 or 3 groundhogs under the shed. Perhaps we'll try again starting in Spring of 2023.

We used moth balls because we read that deters them.

I guess I'll try epsom salts.

We have mint planted but that doesn't seem to bother them.

How big is the shed> Is the inside earth or concrete? I was told epsom salts would deter racoons...didn't work.

Wooden shed (made by Amish), not sure of size. It holds snow thrower or lawn mower depending on the season, stakes, garden shovels, pick, axe, wheelbarrow, assorted flower pots, deer netting, burlap, etc. It sits on pressure treated wooden beams so it doesn't rest on the ground. It sits under the eaves of the house so part of it gets no weather keeping the ground in the back and part of the sides completely dry.

I do have a container of Epsom salts so it isn't as if I'm spending $$ for something that may or may not work.

The only other thing that comes to mind is to dig a narrow but semi-deep (4-6 inches) trench and put chicken wire into the trench and tacked to the shed siding. We never did get the racoons to leave....they still come looking for spilled bird seed. You may have to do some raised bed container gardens.

The ground hogs would just dig below the trench. We have very large rocks we put around the sides of the shed. They dug below those.

The only plants I have are ones the animals don't eat: iris, peonies, mint and daffodils. Everything else goes on hangers so they can't get to them. I gave up putting out a nice patio pot with assorted plants - I'm not providing a salad bar! Up until now, they've never touched the chrysanthemums on the ground and we've lived here over 33 years.
