Turning off eSATA drive safely

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 operating XP Pro. I just bought a Cavalry External HD CAXM3701T0 with both USB and eSata. I connected it to a spare Sata port using the provided Sata/eSata cable, and, while it is not plug-and-play, it works fine (I was able to do a backup) if I turn it on and then boot my desktop. The external drive has Write Cache enabled.

My question is what is the correct procedure to turn off the external harddrive so that I do not corrupt any data, and also ensure that all the data in the Write Cache has been written. I tried using HotSwap, but, while it recognizes the drive, when I go to uninstall it, it tells me that it cannot be stopped as a program is accessing it.

Also, is there any way of making this plug and play?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi

eSATA is pretty robust and once data transfer is complete just pull the cable thats all I do, using Vista or Win7 but suprise removal should be ok
    on eSATA over USB

Just don't unplug while transfer is taking place. Good way to corrupt files.
