What's the operating system? If it is XP convert the file system from FAT32 to NTFS. It is a much more stable way to go.

NTFS can read FAT32 but not the other way round. If you convert there is no going back.

Convert FAT32 to NTFS file system.
    Start/Run.......convert [drive letter]: /fs:ntfs ENTER

It surely is in windows Xp - at least XP pro which i have. Go to Run type in msconfig and click on the startup tab on the extreme right.
If your Xp does not show this then you may have a problem.
Alternatively here a MG there are freebys that will show what is starting up on bootup. I use Starter - try that

Since you are apparently using Windows XP; do you actually mean that you want to "disable the Chkdsk utility" from running automatically on startup?

CHKDSK is a command in DOS and Microsoft Windows system which verifies hard disk or floppy disk for file system integrity. It is similar to fsck command in UNIX. Under Windows 2000 and Windows XP, CHKDSK can also check disk surface for bad sectors, the task previously done by SCANDISK. CHKDSK can also fix the errors that are found.

The information below will allow the Windows Scandisk and Chkdsk utilities to be disabled.

Disabling Chkdsk for Windows 2000 and XP Users:
    (1) Run the Registry Editor (regedt32.exe)
    (2) Under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree, go to the following subkey: \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
    (3) Change the BootExecute entry to: autocheck autochk *
    (4) Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.

Disabling Scandisk for Windows 98 and 98SE Users:
On the toolbar click Start, click Run, type Msconfig, and then click OK. Click Advanced, and select the Disable Scandisk after bad shutdown option.

Disabling Scandisk for Windows ME Users:
    (1) Run the Registry Editor (regedt32.exe)
    (2) Under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree, go to the following subkey:
    \System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem
    (3) Change the DisableScandiskOnBoot entry to: 01 (Note: using the value 00 will re-enable)
    (4) Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.
