It's a TV show. A CSI with a laptop meets with a geek sporting a Blackberry or something like that. Geek sends a file from the Blackberry to the laptop.

Total fiction? I was just told there was no way for a computer to talk wirelessly to another device without a router. But if two computers both talk "wifi" what's to stop software from communicating thru?

    Can't be done?

    Hasn't been done?

    Has been done?

You can definitely communicate without a Router. It's referred to as an ad-hoc network connection.

    Who told you that?

Bluetooth is a proprietary open wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances (using short wavelength radio transmissions in the ISM band from 2400-2480 MHz) from fixed and mobile devices.

Note: I do not own any PDA/smartphone device and none of my computers has Bluetooth. I'm just pointing out that it can be done.

The old technology used IR (infrared) http://www.epinions.com/content_2130354308?sb=1

Adhoc (WiFi), Bluetooth, and then there's the whole thing where they're both connected to the internet. I used to use BT all the time with my Nokia phone. When they were both synced I would see the phone in My Computer just like a drive. I'd be able to send and even pull files from the phone at will, as long as they were both synced and had permissions.

Now I just email it from the phone to my email acct.

Thanks. I found a lot of geek talk about it. Military applications, first responder applications, etc.

But apparently they don't want ordinary people to have it or SOMEBODY would suggest a program to set it up.

In Windows 7 (sorry, it's been a few years since I've used XP) I go to Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center and click Set up a new connection or network. It's just part of Windows, no other programing needed (Win7). A quick Google search for XP ADHOC produced this http://www.labnol.org/software/ad-hoc-wireless-network-in-windows-xp/11486/
