Tweaking start menu (winxp)

does ne one know of a way to tweak what the start menu reads instead of it saying start can i change the word perhaps? if ne one would be able to help me out it would be much appreciated

 

How much work are you willing to do to accomplish this?
I can give you a walkthrough, but it's pretty tough
unless you really really know what you are doing.
I'll give you a tip:
You need to know how to use a hex editor.

 

hmm i dont know how to use a hex editor, if you want you can give me a walkthrough and hopefully i can figure out a hex editor at least enough to do this

Seriously, no problem. It's not rocket science, don't get me wrong.
But it is a lot to mess with just to get your start button to say
something else. Anyway, like I said you need a hex editor.
I'd suggest UltraEdit. I don't know if it's available in this site or not.

1)Copy the \windows\explore.exe file to a new name (e.g. explorer_1.exe)
2)With the hex editor, open that file and go to offset 412b6
3)You will see the word start with blanks between each letter
4)Edit it any 5 characters or less
5)Save the file
6)Boot to DOS
7)Copy the existing c:\windows\explorer.exe to explorer.org
8)Copy explorer_1.exe to explorer.exe
9)You will also need to replace the explorer.exe in the c:\windows\system32\dllcache file as well with the new one.

Note: If the partition is NTFS and you can't access the files from DOS:

1)Start Regedit
2)Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon.
3)Change the value of Shell from Explorer.exe to explorer_1.exe

Another tutorial.Also you may have to disable file protection to do this.And the offset mentioned by ComputerGate:Is it for windows xp sp2.Because updates do change the files.

That's pre-sp2. But I highly doubt the file for the start button would
be changed by it. The tweak you listed looks good as well.
6 in one, half a dozen in the other.
