I installed this program"TweakVI 'Basic' Edition 1.0 build 1075" and now I have a problem after just browsing thru the software. Totalidea(developer)will
only help with the pro version.

My problem is with the Control Panel. In the section for setting Control Panel
Settings, the Hide "Control Panel" and all files associated is ticked and I can't
"untick" it. So I have no Control Panel. I've unticked it, rebooted and keeps
coming back "ticked". I've done this several times.
I've restored backups numeruos times and they all come back as "Failed".
This in itself is not a big problem as all the files in the Control Panel are still there,
but now for some reason my printer won't work . This happened after the Control Panel went into hiding.

    HELP

    Thanks John

Can you be more specific? The control panel is not hidden?

Whats the issue with the printer? What errors come up? Does the printer show as offline inside the Printers control panel?

To start with I'm using the Vista Classic View Desktop.
When I click on the Control Panel icon, the folder comes up empty. Basically
    hiding the files.
I can still access the files under C:. So there's nothing missing.
But here also when I click on the Control Panel folder, the name doesn't come up in the address bar. It just says C:, but the sub folders show in the window.
What the problem with the printer is, or if it's related I'm not sure,
but it started when the Control Panel folder started coming up empty.
When I try to print, all it says it can't perform this function. Everything "appears" normal. It's like the printer is invisible to the computer.
No errors have come up except when I do a restore it basically says the restore failed.
I figured a windows restore would clear everything up. I've also done a check disk, but no errors came up.
I'm blaming everything on TweakVI because all this started after browsing thru the software. I don't remember doing any tweaks
I did all the back-ups which I've restored but nothing has changed.
Maybe this just a Vista thing. There was a warning when I downloaded
TweakVI to use at your own risk.

    I hope this helps
    Thanks John

I don't like this program, at all.

Makes some very shoddy work in the registry. At any rate, it doesn't even work for me under SP1. That doesn't stop it from mucking around int he registry, of course. It creates multiple keys over and over :/

Alright, you will need to get your hands dirty. Open regedit (start, search box, regedit).

Go to this key and expand out policies:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

See the subfolder Explorer? Highlight it and tell us what it shows to the right. Screenshots are fine.

All right here's what it says:
    There are 2 explorer headings.

    1. Explorer-
    (Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
    NoControlPanel REG_DWORD 0X00000001(1)

    2. Explorer-
    (Default) REG_SZ (Value not set)
    NoControlPanel REG_DWORD 0X00000000(0)

    -Run
    (Default) REG_SZ (Value not set)

I'm thinking it would a good idea to get rid of TweakVI.
Should I do this before changing the Registry or after?

    Thanks John

Certainly can't hurt. Nuke that POS ;)

Sorry, I don't like it either, after trying it.

I'm afraid to report the problem isn't fixed.
I did make a mistake when I told you there was two Explorer files.
The first one was actually "Exlorer".
I tried to do a back-up but when the panel came up, the Create button was washed out. I clicked the Restore point and that came up with the message
"Restore Point creation disabled by Group Policy".
I forgot to check the printer.
I've been racking my brain if there was something else I did that might have caused this problem.
The only thing I did previous was Uninstall "Arc Soft". That took a bit of work, because it left a bunch of stuff behind. I use WinPatrol and Arc Soft kept wanting to add something to the Start-up. Everytime I denied it, it kept trying. So it had to go. Apparently there's some issue with Vista.

Other than that everything is working just fine.
I've talked to our guys at work, but none of them is familiar with Vista.
Looks like I'm getting close to pulling out the Rescue Disks.
This is starting to sound like a Soap Opera.

I certainly appreciate your effort, and I've learned a few things.

So I was going to install this program, but after reading this thread decided not to.

What would you recommend for tweaking and optimizing Vista x32 SP2?
