Two computers with similar problem

I tried to swap hard drives on my two computers. Computer #1 would not even start the monitor, while computer #2 would not exit from the BIOS screen. After setting the jumpers to privious settings, computer #2 finds a primary drive as EIDE drive with 10248 as its size. I then changed the boot order to diskette A, CD-ROM, hard disk C, but still the computer will not boot. Should I use a bootable disk? If so, the windows 2000 is too large for a floppy. May I use a burnt cd? Computer #1, on the other hand, reads a hard disk failure, and then an invalid system disk. None is present. Possibly because the drive is an earlier version of windows? If so the computer has a second hard drive, may I use it instead?

I do not have any disks for either computer.

Here are specifics of the hard drives swapped. Samsung Legacy Voyager 3: Cyl 13424, HD 15, SEC 63, and 6.48 GB. Fujitsu limited: interface ATA-5, 10.24 GB

    Any ideas?

Jumper settings should usually be set to Master (first) for the drive with the Operating System (Windows) on it, usually C: drive, the other two primary settings would be Slave (second), or Cable Select (special IDE/ATA cable is used that sets master and slave) and would be used on systems with multiple hard drives. These jumper settings are usually on the label on the internal hard drive itself. I use needle nosed pliers to pull and reset them.

I have the jumpers set to the settings which the previous drives were before exchanged. If done otherwise the systems would not recognize the drive. Found that out.

I don't understand the details of your post.

Why did you swop the drives?
Do you know that both were working before the swop?
Was the win2000 operating system on both drives, or just one?
If you do not have any disks for the pcs why change the boot order?
As Bug says, you have to get the jumpers right.
With one hard drive, set it to Master and connect the end connect on the flat cable.
Make sure the side with the coloured stripe on the cable is towards the power supply cable.
When you reboot go into the bios get it to detect the drives then save changes and exit to see the OS.

Here's the story: I have two computers neither will boot. The dell computer had a samsung HD, but it cannot find the drive according to bios. The second computer boots on occasion. Whenever it did boot it ran windows 98. I had assumed before that it was windows 2000. I thus took the two drives from the second computer, since it seems to have a short or something. The dell now finds both drives but still will not boot. It stops at the f1 continue or f2 setup screen. I believe the jumpers are correct, otherwise it wouldn't find the drive or it gives an error message.

Any ideas? Remove the battery to clear the system?
Also I do not have a windows 98 cd or boot disk.

Please try to order your information and answer the questions, they are asked for good reason.

From what you have said I deduce that you have inherited 2 older computers from somewhere.

It is unclear if you have ever seen them working, or if they have operating systems installed.

You also have access to at least one other pc, the one you are using on the internet.

I would recommend you connected each hard drive in turn to the working pc as a slave drive, and read the contents.

Post again if you can do this preferably with results.
