Two diff ide devices on smae Channel

As some of you here know, I am working on a new build, I just wanna know if i can use a CD drive and a Hard drive on the same IDE Channel, Or would I run into problems trying to set up / install windows?

MOBO - IDE - HDD (jumper setting on Master) - CD/DVD (jumper setting on Slave)

I had mine setup like that until last week.

 

As nedlamar says, as long as one device on an IDe channel is set to master via the jumpers on the back, and one is set to slave, you will have no problems. These can be in any order on the cable as well.

 

Yes Collins is right, they don't have to be set the way I have them. The reason I have them set in that order is because the middle connector wont reach the optical drive.

 

Isn't there a performance hit on the HDD by being cabled with an optical?:confused I've never done that but I've heard it said.

 

I've never run into any noticable issues with it set up that way, I have heard similar but never experienced it myself.

 

Perhaps that's only a benchmark thing but from what I remember, the hard drive is slowed to the optical's data transfer speed. Anyways, I'll stop hijacking this thread. Sorry bio

 

I thought as it was a shared cable and time division multiplexing was used the signals could be at the native speed of the device?
