I'm currently run ZoneAlarm as my firewall on my Win98 OS and would like to try Jetico firewall as ZA is getting out of the Win98 support business . Since you should not have 2 firewalls, I wondering if it is okay to shut down ZA and try out Jetico to decide which I prefer.

    Hi Jud:)
By all means shut down zone as you shouldn't use two firewall's as they conflict with each other.

ZoneAlarm 4.5 edition, not the latest, will work in Win98. However, when I ran my system security on Shields Up, it failed the ping test so I'm looking for something that will pass all tests. I'll let you know how I make out.

Well, after loading Jetico firewall, I ran a security check on Shields Up and it too failed the ping test. I really don't know how important this is but it sounds like a serious security weakness. I'm not sure what to do about this and would appreciate some input on this issue. Thanks for your help.

Well, which ports failed? More info, link or screenshot would be good.

No ports failed: all were stealth. Just the "ping reply" failed. See link below.
As for Jetico firewall, I didn't care for it at all. Every site I went to generated a Jetico pop up to allow or not. Sometimes 5 or more of these pop ups were generated on one screen even though I had indicated "always allow" previously. Also, I had 2 fatal exceptions during the short time I tried it, and it slowed my system down substanially. I have now deleted it and I'm back to ZA.

    The Shields Up site is:

    Thanks for your help.

That's one of ZA's many strengths, it's ease of use, and it works in the background.

    Have you considered Agnitum Outpost?

It very secure, and once set up, simple to use.

Also works on all Windows, and they have a free version.

Yes, I've tried Outpost and it too, slowed my system down. I also tried Sygate and I couldn't even boot up. I think Win 98 is my problem but I want to wait for Vista before getting a new system. My main concern now is the "ping reply" that ZA has failed. Again, I don't know how serious this is. I can't get anyone here to answer on this issue. Thanks again for your help!

While it maybe out its an early beta and not the wisest install on what seems to be an older PC and especially if its the only PC in the house. It doesnt have much legacy driver support as yet, I was emailed on a stack of legacy network drivers that could help the other day from msconnect but many other drivers have not been updated or tested as yet.

I think Jud149 is making the best choice and holding back before updating their PC hardware/software until Vista is released or final concete specs are released ( the ones now are subject to change ).

@Jud149 you could also try an older version of Zonealarm, ok it wont have some of the add-ons like antispyware scanner etc but they are capable firewalls still.. version 5 should be ok on Win98 http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=zalarm

I'd love to answer that, but I don't know what test you're referring to.

I'm familiar with Shields Up, but not your test results or what you mean.

Anyway, if it reports all your ports as stealth, that's pretty good and not a concern.

    HI!
I run XP SP2 on a newer eMachine computer using Zone Alarm Security Suite...latest version, and I also pass all ports stealthed, but fail the Ping test.
I do not believe it is anything to really worry about if you also have security like Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard and a good antispyware program working in addition to Zone Alarm. Run CCleaner to erase your tracks and you should be just fine.
If Zone worked well for you, I see no reason to switch now.

    :)
