Two instances of UAA HD Audio drivers

I got an old motherboard (ASUS P5GD1, with onboard Realtek ALC861 audio (what it says on the box)) from a friend and upgraded the display card (ASUS EAH4670 i.e. ATI Radeon 4670) and HDD, so I have to install Windows (XP SP2) from scratch. However, it had given me loads of problem, mostly to do with the onboard Realtek driver.

Problem 1: I install the chipset drivers from the installation CD and the drivers that comes with it (too lazy to download the drivers at first - prove to be a big mistake!). Although I have sound (if it boots), something hogs the CPU resources (30-40%) when nothing is running. I tried downloading the latest drivers from Realtek (5.10.0.5772) and ATI (8.561.0.0) and it still didn't work. I searched the threads on Majorgeeks and verified that KB888111 is installed ok. So out of dispair, I decided to upgrade to the BIOS from ASUS (although the latest available is still a bit old - circa 2005!) and reinstall everything. Then the CPU resources problem goes away, but problem 2 arises!

Problem 2: I have the then latest Realtek and ATI drivers, but after their installation, I have two instances of Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for HD Audio under Windows' PCI devices, one of them have an exclamation mark next to it. In the properties dialog it says "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)". The other one, the onboard audio is ok. I search the majorgeeks threads and suspect it is a HDMI audio device on the display card (although I didn't use a HDMI interface). I have checked in my Windows audio devices in the Control Panel that everything is pointed to Realtek HD audio (there is no other choice).

So I tried to use system restore to go back to bare windows install, and I install the Realtek audio drivers first, and then I install the ATI drivers. Still the same problem UAA device shows up. I ran an Everest report and it shows I have two audio devices, one is the correct Realtek HD audio driver, the other, an ATI RV710/730 - HD audio controller. Now I do have audio but the problem device really bugs me.

    So my questions are:

    (1) Is there a way to "properly" install the drivers (say in what order) so the problem UAA HD Audio driver can start properly (assuming it is installed ok)? At present, under "Sound, video and game controllers" I cannot see a ATI audio device or HDMI devices installed (perhaps because it couldn't start properly).

    (2) In fact I didn't plan to use the HDMI audio on the display card and would just use the onboard audio which seems ok at the moment. May be I can disable the problem device on the display card (?) so it doesn't cause the resource conflict? (Although it means if I plan to use it in the future I couldn't!)

Attached is a Everest summary report. Please tell me if I need to attach a more detailed report of the physical / PCI devices.

I would really appreciate some expert advice here. Although without previous advice from other threads here I wouldn't have gone this far!!

Hi! Welcome to Major Geeks! :wave :major

Sorry it took a few days to get to your problem... ok.... here we go....

:( Unfortunately, you have no choice in the matter. You must 'use' the HDMI crap-ola on the video card (you won't actually use it, but you do need to install it). There's a good chance that the drivers on the ATI web site are not 'complete' like the drivers from the actual card builder's web site would be. ATI cards and NVidia cards are worlds apart, besides just the chip maker. Most (if not all) NVidia cards can use the drivers from the NVidia web site w/o issues, this is not true of most ATI cards. So, uninstall the video drivers, and download them from the card maker's web site; it's made by Asus and they have 2 different 4670 models, but they both use this driver. You should also install a current chipset driver since the ones on the CD may be out of date (they should still work, but who knows). You can download them from this link. And you should uninstall the sound drivers too. Use the drivers at this link. The Everest report says you have the RealTek 880d HD audio chip, but Asus says you have the RealTek 861 chip, which is NOT high-def, and does NOT use KB888111; this explains alot. So, to summarize:

    1. uninstall audio and video drivers; restart PC.
. . .if the New Hardware Wizard opens upon reloading to the XP desktop, cancel it
    2. install chipset drivers; restart PC.
. . .if the New Hardware Wizard opens upon reloading to the XP desktop, cancel it
    3. install video drivers; restart PC.
. . .if the New Hardware Wizard opens upon reloading to the XP desktop, cancel it
    4. install audio drivers; restart PC.

Let us know how it goes! GOOD LUCK!!!!
    :-D

Thanks for the in-depth analysis! Before I embark on the big reinstall feat, just wish to clarify the above: do you mean the actual chip on my motherboard is Realtek 880d instead of 861 as printed on the ASUS box (everything comes with it including the drivers CD assumes it is a 861)? And which one is capable of HD audio please? The current HD drivers gives me sound ok and the soundmanager program seems to be happy with it... I will be a bit disappointed (if not feeling conned :cry) if ASUS lies about the board having HD audio on the box...

Will report again after I try the reinstalls! Fingers crossed... :wave

First of all, thanks. But it appears the onboard sound is indeed HD Audio (be it 861 or 880: in the Realtek sound manager it says 861, but in Everest or Device Manager it is 880). Also, I tried installing AC97 driver but it crashes everything, so I have used the Reaktek HD Audio driver. For the display, I used the latest ATI driver from the manufacturer ASUS's website. It

I did all the steps exactly as you suggested (even reversed the installation order of the video and audio drivers) but the same problem persists, i.e. two instances of Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for HD Audio under Windows' PCI devices, one of them have an exclamation mark next to it. In the properties dialog it says "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)". I notice the ATI driver did install a HDMI Audio driver but it didn't load at startup, and I am stuck with the Microsoft UAA driver with an exclamation mark. Also, I see no HDMI Audio device in the Windows audio devices.

Is there any other things I can do? Is it possible to change the resources that the device use as suggested by Windows Help, so it can load but I don't know how to do it....

Really depressed. Can you help again? :cry
