    hello

i have a "compaq notebook 100" laptop which has a port (or whatever you call that thing) where i can connect an external monitor.

i know that i can use the laptop monitor but i would like to also have the external monitor, it just displays what i see in the original monitor, i don't want to extend the desktop or something like that, or do you think theres something else that i could do?

    im having a problem
in slackware linux 10 i can make the monitor displays 1024x768
but in microsoft windows 98 second edition when i try to put it in 1024x768 it displays only a part of the desktop and then i must move my mouse to the edge of the screen to display the rest, why? is there any way to change this?

i did already try to see all the options in the deskop\monitor screen and i have the best drivers.

    thanks for your time

you need to set both monitors to the same resolution to make it work

did you try lowering or changing the monitors refresh rate? (in the display setttings advanced button, monitor tab)

I'm pretty sure you do want to extend your desktop. Don't you want the two monitors to act as one big monitor?

If not, I'm not really sure what you are doing.

Try different resolution settings from your desktop until you find one that works. You should be able to get something to work. 1024x768 probably is just not supported.

~pyrate~: i don't think thats the problem because it displays the 1024x768 screen... but i have to move my mouse to the edge to view the rest of the screen.

redderthanafeut: well, it works in slackware linux 10...

have you tried lowering the refresh rate to 60Hz(on the CRT)?

also ... *completely* uninstalling the video driver and then reinstalling fixes all sorts of weird problems ... now I could point out a tut that will tell you how to *completely* uninstall a video driver but only if you have an ATI or nVidia card

further, is the driver a linux driver? it may not be completely compatible with windows

hold on ... can you see the the entire viewable area of the monitor? like ... you have to move your mouse to the edge of the screen then the screen movesor scrolls to the parts of the screen you couldn't see before ..... if that is the case .. that happened to me with my dual screen and i had to adjust the resolution to what my TV could support(ie 640x480) any higher and i had to scroll around the TV to view my entire desktop on my TV ... also my old monitor can do 1024x768 *but* only at a 60Hz refresh rate

    EDIT:

hold on ... can you see the the entire viewable area of the monitor?(I am *not* referring to your desktop, if you get the difference) like ... you have to move your mouse to the edge of the screen then the screen movesor scrolls to the parts of the screen you couldn't see before ..... if that is the case .. that happened to me with my dual screen and i had to adjust the resolution to what my TV could support(ie 640x480) any higher and i had to scroll around the TV to view my entire desktop on my TV ... also my old monitor can do 1024x768 *but* only at a 60Hz refresh rate
