Not sure if this is the correct thread for this question, as I am new to Major Geeks.

I have two AMD Palomino 2700+ processors and stock heat sinks that I have installed on two of the same boards being the Gigabyte GA-7VT600 1394.

I have one that is stating it is running at 47-49c under load and the other is showing to be at 62-64c under load. I keep my room temp at around 70-78f depending on how many comps I have running together in the same area.

The one that is hot, in my opinion, had been previously looking up and I checked the fan speed & temp. It was at around 3300rpm, again stock HS & Fan, and locking up at around 68-72c. It was hard for me to tell when it actually locked up but this is a good range that I found.

I have installed a fan that runs at 4400rpms and it is maintaining 62-64c under load and is not locking up.

A few questions but I will try to keep it to the two main ones.

    1. Why do I have a different temp for the same processors and HS?

    2. Do I have another problem with the hot one that I may not be seeing?

Both installed on same board, same thermal grease (basic stuff) but different cases. However the cases are both very well ventilated with 80mm fans and the hot one has one extra fan by way of the power supply having two 80mm fans on it.

I have two different PSU's though, in watts, the hotter one running a 550w and the cooler one running a 520w.

I have some silver #5 thermal grease and new full copper HS with a 80mm 6000rpm fan that I am going to install on the hotter one to be safe as I do not use this comp, my friend does. He does not keep his house as cool as I try to.

Hope I haven't committed a foul here, :), with this long post.

Thx for the help ahead of time as I see the folks in here seem to have good advise.:D

Is the one that is overheating a new build or did this happen all of a sudden? The reason I ask is because you may not have seated the HSF properly on that computer. If this happened all of a sudden, though, then it would be doubtful it needs to be reseated if it was running cool before.

You have a unique situation here....everything is controlled for (room temp, hardware, thermal paste). I can't think of anything except a HSF that is not properly seated.

Well lets see I have some thoughts on this...
You could try running them both outside of the case to see if there are any major differences there, if not then there is an airflow problem in the hotter case....
Also, look at the PSU's you have I find the the PSU's with the bottom fans expel heat better(also takes the ambient hot air right off the heatsink) than the ones with the fans on the back of it.
And the 3rd thing I can think of is, did you use the same amount of thermal grease on each? did you clean each the same way before applying the thermal grease?

Hope this helps in some way :cool

    1. Re-apply thermal paste and make sure the HSF is seated correctly
    2. Use some compressed air to clean out the dust in the case
    3. Make sure there is nothing obstructing the air flow in the case (ie, cables, stuff like that)
    4. Check to make sure your fans are blowing air in the correct direction (Front sucking air into the case, rear exhaust, If you have a top, top exhaust, and the HSF should be blowing air on the heatsink, not sucking air off it.
