    Thanks Snakefoot. I did read through the page, and the problem was that I had simple file shareing enabled by default, and this was why I couldn't take ownership of the files. (That seems backwards to me - but I do understand it too.)

    Anyway - I've got it now. Just a matter of backing up the stuff to CD, then I can reformat and start with a clean slate.

    TY again all for your help, once again, major geeks comes through in the clutch.
