    Any help would be great!

Got a lenovo T60 laptop with Win XP SP2
All drivers are installed - It appears like they are correct from device manager
Got HD audio and but no sound.

Deleted soundmax drivers, got rid of the registry key with kb888111, Applied MS hotfix then installed drivers - no sound

Removed everything(sound related) from add/delete programs and deleted key at HKLM/software/microsoft/Windowsxp/SP3

Installed kb888111xp2en then reinstalled soundmax drivers - no sound

I must be doing something wrong, but I can't seem to find it. Can anybody offer a solution?

    Thanks in advance,

    K

Hmmm... I just checked the file KB888111 available from Lenovo, and it's a different size than the one available from Microsoft. So, first, uninstall any sound drivers you have installed, and remove the KB888111 from Lenovo. Restart the PC. Download KB888111 again using this direct link, straight from Microsoft. If you don't still have the sound driver .EXE file from Lenovo, download it from this link. Do not install anything yet. Download TUGzip. TUGzip can extract RAR files, ZIP files, 7zip files, many EXE files, and just about any archive or self-extracting archive you're likely to encounter. When installing TUGzip just click 'Next' all the way through. At the end of the install, there will be a little check-box for "Launch TUGzip"; go ahead and launch it; click "Next" all the way through again until you see a "Finish" button; there will be a column on the left side with a bunch of different archive formats; click the "Select All" button; click "Finish". A window will open that looks like an Explorer-type window, close it. Right click the sound driver file, and click the 2nd upward pointing green arrow, it will say something like "Extract to: .\filename" and the file will extract to a folder of the same name. Now, install KB888111 by double clicking the file I linked to above. Towards the end of the install, the 'New Hardware Wizard' might open. If it does, leave it open. When KB888111 is done installing, click "Finish" to close its window. If the 'New Hardware Wizard' is not open, go to the Device Manager, right click the sound device, and select 'Update Driver'. Now that you are in the 'New Hardware Wizard', follow the steps in this thread to install the driver. You've already done the first part, so start at step #4. In steps 6 and 7, you'll point the Wizard to the following location 77a224ww\SMAXWDM\W2K_XP. After finishing the steps, but before restarting the PC, click Start, click Run, type services.msc and press Enter. Scroll down through the resulting list and make sure that Windows Audio is set to "Started" and "Automatic". If it isn't, right click it, select 'Properties', and make the appropriate changes. Then close the Services window, and restart the PC. Hopefully, once the system is loaded back up, you'll have sound! Good luck, and let us know how it goes!!!

And if you're in the US, have a great Thanksgiving Day!!! :-D

    Thanks dlb,

I was psyched to see your solution. Thanks for taking the time to help me out.:)
Unfortunately, I installed service pack 3 between the time I posted and then went back to look at the thread. I was grasping at straws, trying to think of anything that might fix this issue. I figured sp3 might have an update that could solve the problem. Wrong!

Anyway, I tried your solution with sp3 and it reports that KB888111wxpsp2 won't install because the service pack version of the system is newer than the update I'm applying.

Yup, it looks like I screwed it up before I could apply your solution. Can I uninstall sp3?

    Any more ideas?

    Thanks again.

I searched the web for more info. Set windows back to sp2 via the registry and installed the microsoft patch you linked me to. I followed your directions and still no sound.

I'm reinstalling windows clean with sp2. I'll try your idea when it's done and report back. I'm crossing my fingers.

No luck on the microsoft driver and unzipped audio driver install after reloading windows. No Sound.

I'm convinced it's somehow related to the HD audio and windows interaction.

Windows XP Pro SP2 shows UAA bus driver for HD audio in Device manager. All drivers are installed are report they are working. Still no sound. I'm Stumped. Any help would be really appreciated :).

Hmmmm... even after a clean install of SP2, you have no audio? Crazy. Is their a physical volume knob or button on the laptop that's maybe turned all the way down? I know I've seen volume knobs on older ThinkPad laptops, and many older Toshiba laptops had 'em too. There may also be a 'mute' button somewhere on the laptop. Go to the Control Panel, and select 'Classic View' on the left side if you haven't already, then open the Sounds and Audio Devices feature. Go to the Sounds tab and select 'Windows Default' from the drop down menu for sound schemes. Then select a sound that has a little speaker icon next to it in the list of available sounds. If the 'Play' button is not grayed out after you select a sound, then we know the software is installed and functioning, and that the problem is either that the volume is turned down somewhere, or muted, or the speakers are somehow disconnected, or something may be wrong with the headphone jack which is preventing the audio from coming through the speakers. If you have a set of headphones, plug 'em in and see if that works. Check every nook-n-cranny in the Sounds section of the Control Panel and make sure that nothing is muted or turned all the way down. Let us know what you find out! Good luck!

Whew! Problem fixed. I went to the Lenovo site and downloaded system update. I let it scan the system and download all drivers it wanted. I updated all of them and the sound works now. I'm not sure which update fixed it, but at least it works!

Thanks for your help with this frustrating thing! :)
