    Hi,

    Am I missing something simple?

When I play a music CD the GUI runs but there is no audible music.
I have checked every volume control I can find including the dial on the front of my Laptop PC.

I have tried to update but I'm told all updates are installed and running properly.

I am new to Linux, Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04

A brief synopsis of install and run procedures for any CD player would be greatly appreciated.

The music plays in windows Media Player. ( Dual Boot )

    Thank you

We will need more details. Has it ever worked?

Also, it can't be using Windows Media Player, thats a Windows only application.

    My statement still stands....

Dual booting means two OSes on the same machine. Not that Windows applications such as WMP run in Linux.

I mentioned windows media player works, to show the hardware works.

    Back to Ubuntu.
No it has never worked it is a fresh install of Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04 and it's been Updated.

I believe it may need to be activated?

I am not sure how to proceed.
Is there a way to post what is installed on my Ubuntu?

    Thank you

Im not familiar enough with Ubuntu to say.

With Arch, its just a matter of going to the CLI and typing pacman -Q.

Ok, well, I guess the first thing to do is to make sure ALSA is installed. DO you know what kind of sound card you have, or what the onboard sound is?

I solved my sound problems in Ubuntu by playing around in alsamixer until I had sound. Type that word -- alsamixer -- in a terminal, and check it out.

Adept Manager show's most programs (cached but not installed?)
There are lots of SALSA not installed according to adept manager.

When I open $ Terminal & type alsamixer I found no settings I could alter just what appears to be a gui pasted in.

How are programs made active in Ubuntu eg play music cd.

    Thank you

I went to the Toshiba site and Flashed my BIOs from v2.4 to v3.80 that was my only option.

Still no sound from my Laptop, unlike the Anguished Roar I will let out if I have to go back to windows.

Adept Manager shows almost all cached programs are not active.

This is not the first time I have had compatibility issues with my Toshiba Laptop and Linux distros.
