Now that I found some good free chemist programs, I am less tethered to windows.

I took the 8.10 plunge last night myself.

I already had a dark theme installed. Being on the brave (same as stupid) side, I did not do a backup. Three weeks ago, I lost my system as Ibex did not like ethernet. Last night was somewhat flawless.

I am working puppy now on the Compaq 710 laptop. I am going to try "install to USB" and see if 8.10 digests better on the 710.

never had much joy installing ubuntu on my pc - i think it just hates me,

i'll just stick with mandriva:drool, not a fan of kde4 at the moment though

Is it worth updating to 8.10?
Does it still have the hiccups.

perhaps when i can finally get my Nvidia 9600Gt card and linux to play nice

    2) figure our why i still cant watch dvds on my computer

    3) figure out why i can see video on youtube and other sites, but cant get any sound yet, i can play/hear music from my flash drive. just not on the internet it seems

You have to enable DVD with the medibuntu repostitory

Flash is buggy at best. I installed Adobe 10 (non-free flash) and still have grey screens sometimes. Restart FF and that solves that.

I will post directions for the above this evening if no one else beats me to it.

That being said, here is the page to help for about any Ubuntu Distro you have. I have successfully used this on Gutsy, Heron, and Intrepid.

    Best of Success!

Medibuntu also contains Adobe Reader and Google Earth.

Can you see the flash on this page?

Oh, and shockwave will not work in Linux, but if flash is installed you should be able to see the animation.

If the screen is greyed out, try this link.

    Re: my desktop

In the CompizConfig Settings Manager> Desktop> Desktop Cube> Appearance> Skydome you set the background picture.

I prefer the 3D Windows also.
