Ubuntu 9.0.4 auto install identifies windows 2000 and XP on my computer but it does not offer the auto boot for selection during installation process (option1 is to remove windows, option 2 is advance and I am novice). Is there an alternate way to install ubuntu while maintaining the XP and window 2000 integrity? Appreciate if you could point me to a link for instructions.

I am not sure if you have installed Ubuntu 9.04 already. Install will update the boot menu and you will have a option for the Win partitions found.

If you have already installed Ubuntu-
Open Terminal (Applications> Accessories> Terminal) and enter the following

    sudo update-grub

    Thanks for you reply.
To answer your question, I've not installed Ubuntu. I am using Ubuntu 9.4 CD live for dual both installation. As part of installation Ubuntu should give the option to select dual boot. In my case this option is not available.
The only options presented are: A) Erase XP & window 2000 B) Advance install.

    Option A is no.
Option B since I am Novice, have not tried it.

    Any help is appriciated

The screens I showed were for boot from CD, are you using Wubi inside windows?

You should find a screen similar to this one-

    thank you both.

I'll work with Wubi in the following week.

to answer your question, I'm trying to covert my house to linux. 2 laptops are on linux but my daughters desktop is windows.
With majorgeeks help I've fixed their computers (virus) multiple time and now I want to give linux a try and learn a new operating system . I've had linux at home for 4 months and so far so good except kids can't connect their itouch which means dependency still to windows. All is well, thanks for your direction.

I could show you screenprints from Windows and From Linux where Firefox is the same down to the themes and colors. Once you learn Firefox and OpenOffice, the transition is transparent.

You may find a distro like LinuxMint better suited to learn. It is Ubuntu based, but somewhat more polished. I ran LinuxMint 7 for a long time on my laptop. Mint will run live for testing and also includes Wubi.
