Running Ubuntu 9.04 on an old Dell. 1800GHz CPU, 256MB RAM. All goes great THEN I upgrade to 9.10. Problems so far.

Doesn't always boot, I have to select boot options from the boot menu.
Goes into standby, sometimes unexpectedly, and won't wake up.
Best screen resolution available is 800x600.

Just done a clean install from the 'alternate' disk to see the same problems.

    Any constructive ideas?

I found 9.10 to be unstable so i went back to 9.04

Ya, %20 of people that upgraded to 9.10 have had issues so go back to 9.04 until they get it fixed. My install went well though it is in a VM

What does your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file say?

Use the code bar # at the top of the editor box to paste it in a code box. Mine is below from my desktop.
I also have 9.10 running on a Latitude C821 (8100?) Laptop and compiz is no go, but I have full resolution video.
    Code:
    # xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
    #
    # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
    # values from the debconf database.
    #
    # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
    # (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
    #
    # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
    # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
    # package.
    #
    # Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously
    # in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings
    # here are ignored.
    #
    # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
    # again, run the following command:
    # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

    Section "Monitor"
    	Identifier	"Configured Monitor"
    EndSection

    Section "Screen"
    	Identifier	"Default Screen"
    	Monitor "Configured Monitor"
    	Device "Configured Video Device"
    	DefaultDepth	24
    EndSection

    Section "Module"
    	Load	"glx"
    EndSection

    Section "Device"
    	Identifier	"Configured Video Device"
    	Driver	"nvidia"
    	Option	"NoLogo"	"True"
    EndSection

Tried the upgrade manager to go from 9.04. That trashed the whole system. Reinstalled 9.04 from the CD and burned a 9.10 cd. Installed from it. So far so good.
    Still, it's a flaky release.
