Ubuntu and Kubuntu will not load

I recently had some issues with windows XP and decided to start from scratch I completely cleared the HDD of anything on it and attempted to load a linux based OS from CD. I set my BIOS settings to load CD first HDD second. I got the CD to boot and began to run the program but as soon as the load screen is done my monitor goes funny. Kinda hard to describe it but it appears to be a bunch of lines with little boxs scattered around it and it flashes. I know that was vague but its the best I could do.

I am currently running a dell dimension 4700
3.2 GHz Pentium 4
1 Gig of RAM
150 Gig HDD
256 Mb NVidia GForce Video Card

I have an older Dell and it didnt like Ubuntu,it did real well with Kubuntu and most recently Freespire,
When i ran Ubuntu live my graphics wigged out too,My dell seems to tolerate KDE better than Gnome,it doesnt like xfce either (Xubuntu)

(you dont pick the distro,your hardware does.)

ty for the tip I just found out what the problem was. I was using my graphics card. Ubuntu does not come loaded with NVidia Drivers I guess. So I removed it and then I could boot from CD.

 

After you get the system installed, you will find a popup to enable the drivers or you start synaptic and install envy
