Thanks in advance and sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

I am running Ubuntu 12 LTS on an old PC for a friend and he has a Belkin N300 Micro Wireless USB adapter. This Belkin adapter works on my Windows PC but not on the Ubuntu PC so I know that it is not broken.

The Ubuntu PC can find the wifi signal but connectivity fails as soon as you try and do anything. And comes in and out on its on. It is very strange.

Can anyone please help me get this darn thing working?

    Thanks,
    LibroBrother

PS - My tech skills are only at an intermediate level so please don't blow me away with advanced stuff, thanks :)

Here is an explanation of the problem and a link to download the driver that does work from Realtek
    http://www.thomwilhelm.com/getting-belkin-wireless-n300-usb-to-work-with-ubuntu-12-10/

I have NEVER complied a driver and don't run Ubuntu but I think if you type in the directions in a terminal
    Code:
    cd ~/Downloads/RTL8188C_8192C_USB_linux_v3.4.4_4749.20121105
    sudo su
    chmod +x install.sh
    ./install.sh
    it should work.

Then blacklist the old driver and make sure the new one loads by opening the file manager and
    Code:
Add the line blacklist rtl8192cu to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
Add the line 8192cu to /etc/modules
reboot and it should stay connected.

    (1) Thanks.
    (2) Downloaded driver ... success
    (3) Ran compile code in terminal ... nothing happens - no error, no complete, just nothing
    (4) Have no idea what it means to or how to blacklist ... :(

You will not see anything with the first set of directions. It just does it.

For the 2nd set, open the file manager, like you'd open Windows Explorer. The drill down to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and add this line
    Code:
    blacklist rt18192cu
Then drill down to /etc/modules and add this line
    8192cu

    Reboot.
