Have been running Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron since it's release and have only needed to reboot to XP for printing chores and to retrieve apps for installation on other people's machines.
Hardy does everything I need a computer to do and much more - is stable and works with me far better than any MS product ever did.
That's why the absence from MG's - have been un the Ubuntu forums when learning is needed, but there has even been little need for that.

I come back here to MG's when I have Windows issues and because this, right here, is where I learned most of what I know - THANKS M.G.'s!!!!!!!!!
It's been a great many years trip with you folks!
    Blessings,

New dual boot ubuntu/xp pro sp3 user. Very impressed with the funtioning of ubuntu. Will make for a useful operating system for someone who can't run out and buy windows. Being new to linux i have a lot to learn about file structure, Etc. Cool Forums :-D

Yep:Ubuntu forums very helpful...I got usbflashdrive to setup as a linux booter, and now, when I'm trying to clean up the malware infestated and resource hungry Windows OS's, I usually have that on a string around my neck, and always offer to reboot for them to Ubuntu...

But people in the U.S. are just intimidated by the whole thing: in Europe linux is more popular...

I had to reload Windows again, just to keep up w/what people are using, and have also had to post twice on here, when friend's malware was too dug in...

Only problem I've really had w/linux was the wireless usb drive, and it was doable, just took me a couple days on the formus, first asking for help, and the searching and finding how to do it...but all that command line stuff is part of the fun, and shoots a person's learning curve way forward...

But anyway, I agree, both on the help I get on MG when people have problems I can't fix, and to the pleasure I get from Ubuntu....

Okietech, do you actually maintain that okies can be fixed?
Got a second daddy in Seminole - love 'em and that country, but am in florida.

file system not too hard, only a bit different, command line stuff easy if you keep your wits.
Disagree with "good for people who can't run out and buy windows" - i believe it's good for anyone who likes functionality, stability, and speed without spending a ton on RAM
and other accoutrement to suit a greedy o.s.

my two cents, for what they're worth.
been having a ton of fun with ubuntu and am making new converts every week in my circles.
seems to work very well, also, for folks who "just don't get it" with windows - ubuntu seems to think more the way a human does, or be arranged better for the human mind.

    hey Port-o-son :)

nice to meet up with another okie, i grew up in okla panhandle and lived in okc for 15 years.

yes ubuntu is very cool, i have a lot to learn about file structure excetera. Been using msdos/win since "286" PC days. Giggle.

Only problem i've had is trying to get 3 diffrent email clients to read my email from gmail imap server thru my ISP provider. Doesn't bother me though. I figure maybe i need some plugins or drivers or something. Like i said i'm real new to linux platform.
    God Bless

Papa Al is a real okie - he lived through the dustbowl, did the california trip and all, just like in what we'd call history class.
Yup, been with ya all through the dos days and the MB hdd's.
I'm 48, florida cracker, auto/aircraft/farm implement mechanic 30 years, retired by neck injury, do 'net marketing and 'puter repairs now.
MG's has been "berry berry good to me" and they've taught me much of what I know - been here since the beginning, under different name (had to change name due to female stalker).
Just went through the doggoned IMAP thing with my ISP, Clearwire = was using Evolution and loved it, but have found that Thunderbird works better with IMAP.
You can email me if you think I can help.
    daytonageeks@clearwire.net will reach me anytime.

BTW, Port-o-san was the company that supplied the toilets at the first Woodstock. (alot of folks think it sounds computery..... hawhawhaw).
ALSO, enable private messages on your account? (or not....)

Funny you mentioned Clearwire, that's my isp too. Giggle. I dual boot now with ubuntu/xp as od 2 days ago. Evolution comes loaded in ubuntu. tried it and 2 other email clients with no success in ubuntu. i'm very new to linux so it's probably something i'm overlooking. Haven't tried thunderbird yet in ubuntu but could work. i simply use outlook in XP. Haven't quite figured out all m,y MG settings yet. Does the icon next my username and me "E" status change by themselves or an i change that? Just rambling.

upper left of page "USER CP" takes you to your settings, etc. for your account...
your rank goes by time here and number of posts.
wanted them to list me as "Spongebrain Carhartt pants" but they keep me at corporal, or whatever I am now.
Yeah, I'd try Thunderbird, if I were you - it works fine for me now, after Clearwire's techs and I worked out the bugs. I got it going onm this end, and they took three weeks to migrate my personal account, week and a half to migrate my business account.
Were I you, I would call Clearwire and make SURE they've migrated your account before I beat my head on too many brick walls - alot - I mean alot of accounts somehow didn';t make the migration right and took some special handling on their end - anyway, it's worth a check first.
Need any help with T'Bird, let me know.
    Blessings,
    port-o-san

KDE is nice in some ways, but still requires gnome dependancies in Ubuntu for items like Firefox.

Mail clients like Thunderbird, Evolution and K-Mail all configure the same way.

Oh, and don't discount CLAWS mail either.

If you have pop enabled, the mail does download and with filters you can even watch some spam/junk email forever disappear.
