I had an issue w re installing XP, so friend of mine installed UBUNTU over the top of XP. So, at this point, I can connect to internet w XP, but not thriugh UBUNTU. Call tech support for ISP, they are even more stupid than I am. They had no clue as to how to get their own modem to connect for me. So, my question is this....how do I configure PC to connect w/ Qwest actiontec m1000 modem?

Hello Judy_Berk and welcome to MG.

Are you logging into WinXP or the Ubuntu Desktop to connect?

Are you connecting with Ethernet or wireless, and are you using a router on top of your actiontec m1000?

This thread post shows you are connecting to WinXP, so a post in the Software Forum may be of some help.

It will help to identify how you are trying to connect- wireless or with ethernet.

With that particular PC, I can connect the XP to the actiontec with no problem. No, there is no router. But when I restart and log in using the ubuntu, it does not recognize the modem, and with both I am using ethernet connection.

By the way, thanks for responding.

This post is NOT meant to overwhelm you Judy!;)

Ok, got it, now please let me know what version of Ubuntu you are using.

Open the Terminal (Applictions-->Accessories-->Terminal) and type this

    Code:
    cat /etc/issuecat
You need to enable networking in the gnome-network-manager in the bar next to the clock.

Networking is found at this page.

ok, I am running version 10.04, but when I type in the cat/etc/catissue it tells me no file found. Also when I go to the networking, it just says networking disabled, and it's grayed out so I can't do anything else. My desktop shows the penguin, and it has no gnome, except that I can see About GNOME on the system tab.

    Oops, wrong paste-

    Code:
     lsb_release -a
You need to rebuild the networking and the first step is to ask if a live CD will allow the network to connect. If you have not done much with the Ubuntu side, it may be easy to install again after confirming the network is found.

ok, so when I put in that command I get this:

    No LSB modules are available.
    distributor id: ubuntu
    description: ubuntu10.04.1 LTS
    release: 10.04
    codename: lucid

    Exactly perfect.

Now you need to rebuild your networking, or you need to reinstall Ubuntu and let the system build itself.

    Code:
Right-click your Network Manager icon and select "Enable Networking."
