    So you are needing help getting the system to recognize a USB?

    What version Ubuntu is working and what do you see from this command entered in terminal?

    Try this as this repaired seeing my Samsung Android phone...
    Plug in flash drive and leave it plugged in while you restart system. See if it is found then.....

    I had to "safely" remove it from my windows machine to get it to work on that linux machine

    With the Gnome desktop, right click and eject is the preferred method to avoid a loss of data.
