Ubuntu wireless headache

Not sure if this should be in Linux or networking forum...

I have just bought a Toshiba NB100 notebook with Ubuntu preinstalled, I have never used any Linux based OS before and am having trouble connecting to my home network via wireless.

I am with O2 broadband and have a Thompson TG585v7 wireless router.

The Notebook works fine when connected by ethernet but this is not really what I got the notebook for.

I have no Idea what kind of run commands etc exist in ubuntu.

The network manager shows the network in the network list but does not allow me to view any web pages. I have tried without WEP too but still nothing.

I have had a look through these forums but do not know where to enter the commands shown,

N.B. I have had the notebook 4 hours now and am ready to throw it at the wall.

Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to open a terminal window in order to enter any CLI commands. It will be one of the options in the menus in the upper left.

 

To open TERMINAL click "applications/accessories" and then Terminal that will open the command screen.

 

Thanks billmcc66. I'm having trouble with Parallels and couldn't boot up Ubuntu to give the exact location. What VM are you using there?

 

Mine is Ubuntu 64bit

 

I meant the VM manager that you've got pictured there, within which you seem to be running Ubuntu and Ubuntu64? The one with the window with the menu options "File Edit View Host VM Power ..."? Looks interesting, and I'd like to try it out if I can.
