I have ubuntu installed on my 2nd hard drive it is also in my boot menu, the problem is that when i boot it i get to a screen that asks for "user name"and "password" now when i installed it i did not insert these details so it is a bit confusing that i can not get it running.:confused
Has anyone an idea as to what i can do to get it operational please.

Just hit enter but *nix asks for passwords to elevate permissions, I'm surprised that it let you install without entering your info in the first place. It's more secure than MS stuff is/was.

If i just hit enter it will not run it just come back to the same screen?

Personally Augie i think i screwed the PC with all that other stuff i did (i am still cleaning bits out) but i will persevere with it.

Nah, just reinstall Ubuntu in the same place and this time enter your name and PW. However, I'm not sure what it will do to the dual boot. To get rid of the current dual boot you will need your Vista DVD.

Boot to the Vista CD and go to recovery console.

    Issue this command:

    bootrec /FixMbr

I think i have done some damage in the registryhttp://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Signs/idiot-0011.gif(no panic yet) because it's not only Ubuntu, FF won't run either and even after re-install it still wont run.
I am in the process of cleaning all the :crap out one line at a time.http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/MSN_Emoticons/MSN-Emoticon-136.gifI have lost nothing important but a number of progs will not run and system restore has cleaned all the restore point from before yesterday out so thats a no go.http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/MSN_Emoticons/MSN-Emoticon-133.gif

I can't see how you managed to install Ubuntu without it asking you for a root password, then a username and password for the main user? If you can't remember the password though, you could just boot from LiveCD into recovery mode then type "passwd root" to set the root password.

Or look at /etc/passwd to jog your memory about what usernames are configured on that system.

There are several HowTo documents on how to do this. One of them is here: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword

Oh, and registry entries won't affect Ubuntu - it's a completely different operating system that doesn't know or care about Windows registry settings.

Thanks for that link it looks to be very useful.
During installation (dual boot on 2nd hard drive) I may have entered a password, but normally i only use the same password and user ID as i am the only user of this machine and i have a memory disorder which means i can say something and a moment later not realize i have said it, so i need to keep thing simple.
