asking this question will bruise my ego  ... i can mess with software with ease.. but here is a dumb question. i just bought and installed an optical mouse (which i love, it is so sensitive). do i need to keep the reciever at or around the mouse? do i need a mousepad still?

Sounds like it's wireless as well as optical.

How close the mouse has to be to the receiver will depend on several variables, including local conditions and the characteristics of the wireless technology. There's no standard answer.

The best answer (I think) is: keep the mouse within receiving range of the receiver. You'll know when it isn't close enough. Mouse response will get erratic or disappear entirely.

Mousepad? Use whatever surface turns your crank or feels good under your mouse. An optical mouse will read nearly any surface but a mirror or one that is a smooth dead black with no surface variations.

The real need for a mousepad was to keep the trackball in a mechanical mouse reasonably clean. That isn't an issue in an optical mouse.
