hello, was wondering if theres an alternative to chkdsk in windows, or even a tool in linux or something that can repair my hard drive...I can see the drive in windows (and ubuntu) but when i click on one folder, it gives me an error, and cant open it. The other folders are fine. Should I use some sort of too to recover the files off of there, and if so, what are ones that any of you have used? and had any success? I have read other threads and I will keep looking, but I am just wondering if there's any good ones that people have actualy had success....I think i will try to recover the files first, but then I would still like to try and fix that drive as well..thanks in advance to any suggestions.. :)

oh, and in case you're wondering how this happened, i have been tinkering with linux and had some problems with the mbr and other things related to that, and I don't believe there is anything physically wrong with the drive, just operator error while tinkering with other tools to repair the mbr..

You can probably recover the data using either a file 'un-delete' program, or a data recovery program. There are some good free ones available here at Major Geeks. Here's some links:
Restoration http://www.majorgeeks.com/Restoration_d4474.html (allows for custom file scans; doesn't require installation)
    Recuva http://www.majorgeeks.com/Recuva_-_File_Recovery_d5514.html
TestDisk http://www.majorgeeks.com/TestDisk_&_PhotoRec_d5561.html (recovers data and tests the drive despite the name)
Ultimate Data Recovery http://www.majorgeeks.com/Ultimate_Data_Recovery_d5336.html (standalone; does not require installation)
PC Inspector http://www.pcinspector.de/Sites/file_recovery/info.htm?language=1 (I have used this extensively; it works great; a bit slow and not real friendly, but it gets the job done and it's free)

There you have it! At least one of those should work.

You may want to run chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console too; it just might fix the file system problem. The full diagnostic from the drive manufacturer's web site is probably a real good idea too, just to be sure the drive is 100% healthy.

What is the name of the folder and what is the error you are seeing?
I ask because you mentioned linux. Some distros can be run inside windows (puppy save sessions for one example). What happens is that the folder is formatted different from windows ext2 or ext3 (I don't remember which). It created problems when I tried to defrag or scan in windows because the defragger and scanner didn't know what to do with it so it just hung there.
I finally just erased the folder (using Heidi eraser) and decided if I used puppy again, it could re-create that folder.

It's my music/mp3 folder, with about 80gb of mp3's in it...on a different partition from my windows part, and linux part.

i'm not at my home computer atm, but I believe it was something along the lines of "cant access the folder music, it is corrupt or unreadable" (windows error, i don't remember what the linux error was) I just made a new partition, and i'm gonna try and copy all i can from it.

a little update, i ran seatools, and i guess the drive is failing or there is something wrong with it, seatools said it had 99 errors...ran chkdsk /r and it couldn't fix it, i forget the result, but the scan couldn't finish....so is it dead? I have tried some recovery software, and no luck, all the programs freeze up when i scan...i let recuva run for a while, but it was just frozen
