    Hi all,

I'm at my wits end and i'm hoping someone might be able to offer me an alternative solution to an annoying problem i have.

I have a desktop pc and a laptop which both connect to the same wireless connection. The laptop has a built in wireless network card and the pc is an old one so i got a wireless adaptor. Both have been working fine for 9 months.

The other evening, i was on the net fine on my pc and then the next day i couldn't get on. I haven't been able to get on since. The laptop however is fine.

I'm not particularly technical so i went searching around the net to see what my problem might be. I found that my IP address is showing as 169.xxx.xx.xx, which i understand is where my system cannot assign an IP address and assigns a local one (correct me if i'm wrong).

So i searched the net and i tried the following

    - netsh winsock reset (plus another netsh command but can't remember the exact command now)
    - winsockxpfix
    - LSP fix
    - ipconfig /release and /renew - the renew gives me the error 'An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.
    - Have stop and started DHCP service

So finally i got to the one fix i didnt really know how to do and that was to set a static IP. Did this, shows up as connected fine, but still can't access the internet. After further searching on the net, i found out my ISP, Virgin Broadband, doesnt accept static IP's.

So that's where i'm at. I can see my wireless network but cannot connect to it. Does anyone have any ideas what it might be, and/or any alternatives to how i might fix it.

My last thought was a virus/malware or something but i've run a full scan on Avast, Malwarebytes, spybot and Ad-Aware and nothing has come up.

    Any help is appreciated

    Thanks all

    Steve

Dumb question on my part, but have you tried restarting your Wireless Router at all?

I would try unplugging the power to it, wait 10 seconds and plug it back in.

If that doesn't work, I've got a few other ideas.

    Hi,

I have, i actually unplug my router each evening (eco-warrior wife lol!) so each time i settle in for the evening i switch on my modem, router and pc in one go.

Has been happily working for a year but just suddenly lost it one evening, but just on the one pc.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

is it only wireless youre having problems with? do you have a firewall on that could be blocking something?

are you close enough where you can connect by cable to determine whether the issue is with your wireless adapter?

I haven't tried that yet, cable might just be long enough to reach.

I'll give it a try and let you know

After all that, i found that my firewall settings had been changed and was in 'block all' mode, so i am now resolved !!!!

    Thanks everyone
