    Hi,
I am unable to connect to the internet with firefox, internet explorer and Opera.
I can ping websites fine. I have a weather eye that works fine and connects to the server and my e-mail works fine. I have un-installed firefox and re-installed it, but I am still not able to get on the internet.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Rob

You may wish to disable your firewall until you can get connected.

    hello Timw,

I have the firewall turned off in windows.
    Am I missing something else?

Go to start / run / type "cmd" without quotes......in the command prompt, type:
ipconfig /all --> note the space between config and /all.

when done, click the tiny c:\ sign in the top left...down to edit / select all Then click on the sign again / edit / copy. Paste it into note pad and attach that to your next reply.

Are you going thru a router?

The setting look correct.....if you wire directly into the modem> ...can you connect?

  7. rakerjp

I tried that, but that did not help

Then give me an ipconfig for one that does connect.....look to see if there is a difference.

You wired this computer directly to the modem and still could not connect? You disable the wireless and did a repair on the lan connection?

    Hello Timw,
Thanks for getting back to me.

Here is the other config setting for you. I really do not see any difference between them, besides the ip-address. Yep I really did connect it directly to the router, without it making it any difference. I un-installed the wireless adapter also. I even tried assigning it an ip-address, but that did not help either

Yeah...that's all good. Go to device manager and check your network adapters for any problems.

yep, it does not show a problem in device manager. Should i try un-installing the network adapter and re-installing it?

Yes..try that. Otherwise, I am at a loss. I had a similar issue, and it turned out my onboard nic card died inspite of it saying it was working properly. :(

You could try using a USB wireless adapter.

Well, I tried the un-install and re-install of the network card. It did not make any difference.
It is weird that I can ping any web-site though.
Thanks for your help though. If you come up with any other ideas, just let me know

check out your browser internet options. you might have 'use a proxy' option set. with that set, you should still be able to ping websites, but you wont be able to load them on browsers.

tools - internet options - connections tab - lan settings

    Hello KingSteve,

I cannot find that settiing. Where would it be. I am using
    firefox and IE

on IE its tools - internet options - connections tab - button at the bottom says lan settings. click lan settings and a screen pops up. near the bottom of that screen will say proxy server with a check box saying 'use proxy blah blah' is that checked? unchkeck it if it is and your problem will be solved. if not, tim covered what i would have suggested.

FF is tools - options - advanced - network tab - settings - click the first bubble that says no proxy

firewall turned off to rule out misconfiguration of that?

  24. rakerjp

    rakerjp Private E-2

crazy how you can ping websites but you cant view them in your browsers. after everything that was suggested, im out of ideas as well. your nic is fine if you have an ip address and you get ping out. firewall isnt the issue if thats turned off. tim was helping you, if he didnt think it could be a malware issue you can probably rule that out.

last guess though, did you default your internet options in your browsers? or have you changed anything in your internet security options at all in the past that might have had something to do with your issues now?

    Hello KingSteve,
Nope I did not change anything in the firewall or any of the browsers. I even installed Opera to see if that would work. The only other thing I can think of is to delete the notwork connection and create a new one to see if that helps any

    Hi Guy...

    Here's the deal..

You've disabled the firewall and tried to renew the ipconfg.

    No Worries..

Do a DEFRAG of the Hard Drive about 3 times... Then reboot the system and it WILL work. Had that problem with several computers belonging to several folks and it is tried and true method that works. Thought I'd save you some grief...

Let me know how it works for ya.

Well, I found out what the problem was. It was Norton 360 tht was blocking the use of the internet. Even though I had it disabled,(it was marked as disabled). I found this out by trying to un-install norton, and it would not do anything at all. I then could net even get norton to start back up again. I then downloaded the utility from norton to clean my pc of 360, (which sort of worked). I then tried running the un-install and it removed norton. Now I was able to get onto the internet. so I guess norton got buggered up somewhere and was blocking everything. I then re-installed norton and everything seems to be fine now.
So from now on, I will try the un-install on any product that is "supposed" to protect me from the internet. Just to make sure that it is repsonding properly

Thanks to you all for you input
