    Hi friends,
    I am Amit from India.
I have three problems on my laptop.

First - I have two blank icons on my control panel, I am not sure what they are? They don't give any option other then to create a shortcut and when I tried to do that it gives an error message "Windows cannot create a desktop shortcut.Check to see if the disk is full".
Disk is not full there's around 53 GB free on C drive and more than 17 GB free on the D drive.

Second - Whenever I save any picture and edit it using ACDsee a hidden folder "Originals" is created on the desktop. What is that?

Third - Last but probably the most worrying is that I am not able to create a Restore point. I am getting an error "could not create the scheduled task for the following reason. Class not registered (0x80040154)."
After clicking Ok another message pops-up "There was an unexpected error on the property page: Class not registered (0x80040154). Please close the property page and try again."

The third problem have arised after I have tried to clear the old restore points and create a fresh one after getting an all-clear from the Malware section of Majorgeeks. Here - http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=210179

The pictures of first two problems is uploaded as attachment to this thread - http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=210179. I am not able to upload those pics here, it says already uploaded. So please check it in that thread.

    Kind Regards:
    Amit

Look in your services and see that System Restore is turned on.
If it is, pehaps something is not registered properly "class not registered" seems to indicate that might be the case.
    Try this
For the two icons appearing, go here
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Control Panel\DoNotUnload
do you see them listed there?
If so, try and put them in the don't load section.
Note: I do not run Vista so I have no way of attempting this.

As far as ACDSee, I've never used it so can't offer any advice.

    Hi mate,
Thanks for your time and efforts.
I am not able to locate SR.INF in C:/Windows/Inf. May be that is the cause of the problem. What should I do to get it back if it's missing?

I am able to locate three items in DoNotUnload, these are -
    1)(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
    2)cpqmgmt.cpl REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)
    3)tmeprop.cpl REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)

I am unable to move it, only options given are Modify/Modify Binary Data/Rename/Delete. What to do?

I am uploading pictures of both as attachment. Please take a look.

    Regards:
    Amit

It could be at another location in Vista. Since I don't have Vista installed on any of my computers, I have no way of checking where it is located. Interestingly, I can see it at the proper location but when I searched for it, XP's search turned up nothing! I knew XP's search was next to useless and that confirms it. I added a search program to one of my XP computers.
Just be sure that you have "show system files" and "show extensions" set to show.

When in doubt, do the safest thing - nothing. None of those three seem like something that should be changed.

I looked in my XP and I do not even have the key DoNotUnload so I'm stuck at this point.

Sorry I can't help you solve your problems. :banghead

I'll keep looking to see if I can find anything else.

    Does this do anything?
Type rstrui into the search box and hit enter

Well I have enabled show system and hidden files and show extentions, so I don't think that's the problem. May be you are right it's in some other location in Vista but I have googled for that but no help.

Ok I'll not change anything. They are not hampering me in any way so I won't change unless I am sure.

Ok. Thanks for your efforts anyways, but please keep looking for a solution for this as not having System Restore can lead me into trouble. I am hoping that you'll find a solution. I'll keep checking this thread daily just to check if you have come up with anything.

Well it just opens up the system restore box which I have tried already a few times to no avail.

Please keep my problem in mind please and keep looking for a solution.

P.S. - Does anyone else of your Majorgeek expert have Vista, if they have can you please ask him to check for my problems. I have some really important data and it is edited daily and I really don't want to risk it. I keep taking backup but still System Restore is a must for me.

    Kind Regards:
    Amit

Me, I don't use system restore. I had to find something else because window 2000 never included system restore. It was included in ME but not windows 2000.
I create images. That way, if something goes wrong, I restore my image.

I might have found the source of the Problem

I think I might have found the problem-

I checked the Volume Shadow Service (by "Clicking Start in search Box Services.msc and enter") and I checked whether it is running. There was nothing written in front of the Volume Shadow Services in the second column and in the third column Manual is written, so I assume that it is stopped and I right clicked on it and I got the first option to Start I clicked on that and it's shown as started but when I restarted and checked again it's again stopped I believe, as the started in front of the Volume Shadow Service was agian not visible. And on right click it is giving option to Start that means it must have been stopped on being restarted, I think that is the main problem. Even if I do not restart the system then also this service is stopped.

    Check these Pics
    a)Service started
    b)After Restart

Please check the system restore logs under "C:/Windows/logs", I don't know what it is but just giving its details if it might be important.

I run the "System File Checker Tool", i.e. "C:/sfc/scannow" and the result I got is shown in Code below, please check it but I don't think that it's causing the problem as it is related to "Microsoft Windows Sidebar":

    Code:
