    Hello,

I have been unable to defrag my system Windows ME for a long time. When I attempt to defrag, the system sounds like it is working, but nothing happens. Even when I allow it to run for hours, it stays at 0% complete.

My system is running very slowly and at times I get a system error message no available stack pages.

I run adaware and Spybot on a regular basis.

Any and all help greatly appreciated.

Hey River. I still run my WinME while I'm learning my "new" Win2k puter, which I've had about a month...rolleyes

Anyhow, to address the slowness, I'd run CCleaner (free download here at MG).
After running the 'clean' function, let it scan for and fix 'issues.' Be sure to let it back up the changes before it makes them.

Also, do you run Scandisk before you try to defrag? Make sure it's set to automatically fix errors.

Finally, if you can't get your system defragger to work, try Diskeeper Lite (free version, also available here at MG.) I actually prefer Diskeeper Lite. The first run will take some time, as can be expected, but you will see a progress bar. Then after the first defrag it runs slick. Hope that's some help. Good Luck. :)

The programs suggested by zbd21 will not run on WinME. I use the IOBit Smart Defrag on my Win2K machine and I like it; but neither of his suggestions will run on WinME. :cool

Hey guys there are two issues to address.

Firstly have you got room to defrag or is you hard drive nearly full. The process involves making temporary copies of files in free space in order to move things about.

You can help with this by having a good old heave ho before defragmenting. Clear out the internet cache, recycle bin, temp files, bak files that you don't need, files that begin with a ~. You can even make some space by temporarily copying off some data or other stuff. Whne you copy it back afterwards it will automatically be defragmented.

Secondly defrag will fail if you have programs that run in the background constantly changing the hard drive. Turn off screen savers at least. Defrag from safe mode with everything else turned off.

    Hope this helps

Defrag programs need a bit of free space to operate in, so first thing is to make sure your hard drive isn't full.

Interruptions from other running programs will prevent the program from completing, so turn off all other applications including anti-virus etc.

If Defrag still won't complete, start your computer in safe mode and run Defrag from there. Nothing else will be loaded and running while you are in safe mode so Defrag should be able to finish its job.

I think the best thing to do is up-gread to XP. Windows ME has a lot of problems.

UNHELPFUL answers? Window ME is a patched up OS which should of never of been. Upgrading to to XP would be the best thing to do. Even going back to 98 would be better...

OK. I pulled out an old PC with Windows ME. Here is how I got Defrag to run.

    1) Power up in safe mode
    2) open My Computer
    3) right click on the driver you which to Defrag.
    4) click on Proderties
    5) click on tool tab
    6) click and run scandisk
    7) once scandisk is done, run defrag from tool tab.(step 5)

Defrag should start to run after a few min's.
Let me know if this works..

Thank you it worked great. It did take hours to run the scan disk, and then even more hours to run the defrag, but they did run! And no errors were found. I hope that they infact ran properly.

    Thank you.
