Unable to download new java update

    I have a laptop with Vista 32. I can't download the newest java update. I get a window up that says Windows Installer Service could not be located. Any ideas on what I should do?

    Thanks for the help. However, I have tried this twice and still can't download the latest java. I keep getting the "Windows Installer Service could not be located" window.:(

    Right-click Computer and choose Manage, in the management console left column navigate to Services and Applications > Services then in the right column scroll down to Windows Installer, right-click it and choose Start.

    If you receive no error message, try installing Java again.

    Thanks. I followed your instructions and this window popped up:

    "The Windows Installer service on local computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."

    Hi

    What Service Pack is your Vista at? if not at SP1 or SP2 then upgrade to the newest and see if that fixes this or you could download the Windows Installer update here ( the 32bit version is named Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x86.msu ) and see if this fixes it.



    Also have you had malware reciently at all?


    You could run System File Checker and you would need to do this from an elevated command prompt and to do this click Start and in the Start Search Box, type CMD and when it shows in the search list right click it and choose Run as Administrator.

    then type sfc /scannow and hit enter, it will run for a while and "may" ask for a Windows Vista DVD so hope you have an original disk.

    I tried downloading Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x86.msu. A window said it does not apply to my system.
