Unable to instal IE6.0

I am running WinMe on a Pentium 3 with 128MB RAM and I currently use ie5.5. This is causing problems with kernell32.dll and when I ran a search I discovered that ie5.5 has “issues” with WinME and I should d/l ie6.0 after doing this however, I was unable to install it. I’ve tried several various attempts and here is what I've been getting....
1. First I close all other applications and disable the anti-virus. (Norton 2004, yes I now know Norton is apparently bad, but I didn’t when I paid for it!)
2. I open the ie6setup.exe file. Then a window opens which reads...
Resume Setup Window - Previous install not completed. Do you want to resume? Or run setup from the beginning? (select if setup has failed more than once)
3. I choose run setup from the beginning (because I have done this several times)
4. Then the setup does not complete again. A window opens which reads...
Setup was unable to install all the components. Please close all applications and try again.

Now I have tried re-downloading the ie6setup.exe with no result. I’ve tried installing it while running windows in Safe Mode with no result.
I ran a search on the problem and the only relevant document I found was a posting in an Experts Exchange forum, but apparently you have to pay for membership in order to see the posted solution! So I thought you guys might be able to help. I found this site last night while trying to rid my system of spy/adware and it was very helpful!

Any help will be greatly appreciated! Oh and I’m running Zone Alarm also if that’s of any consequence. And I did shut that down also during installation attempts.

P.S. I haven't noticed any problems with kernell32.dll since perging my system or the spyware but I'd still like to be able to instal ie6.0.

Don't know if you tried this but go to add & remove programs in the control panel and click on IE and click uninstall, a pop up will ask you if you want to remove or repair it , I suggest repair it first

Thankyou all for your help. Here's where I'm at so far...

aLLiKZar - I tried downloading IE6 from demon, but the same thing happened.
robo - I have rebooted my computer many many times, no change.
DanTekGeek - I can possibly get hold of WinXP, but to be honest, I preffere ME, i don't know much about the way it runs but I just preffere the layout etc. yeah I know, how sad am I?
DV8Cowboy - I shall keep an eye out for a PC mag with IE6sp1, but is there anywhere I can download it from? Or would you suggest it's better to instal is from a disk?
wk990 - I can't seem to find IE in my add/remove list at all. Is that a bad thing?

My housemate had a cd with IE6sp1, tried that, still no go. So I finnaly gave in and switched to WinXP, so now my computer doesn't work at all! Well that's a bit of an over-exageration. But I can't access the net through my browser (I'm not at home at the moment) but my internet does connect, I can sill d/l through Kazaa. (I use Kazza-light to avoid adware). But no site will load through IE or even the web tab on Kazaa. I did manage to connect Messenger (and XP seems to have given me an older version of that!) And games aren't working properly either, here's a wierd thing, all the sound on the Sims sounds like it's in a hall, all reverb and echo!
Norton wouldn't start up and said to re-instal, but now it won't uninstal!
So, so far I'm not very impressed with XP! Infact, the only thing I like about it so far is the way you can click back and forth through pics in the pic preview.
But I've heard nothing but good things about it so I'll persist. But it's very frustrating... I'm an insomniac, I need my chat rooms!!!

And it still won't install IE6!!! Seems to be because of the lack of internet now. Says something about a proxy.
I wish I knew what I was talking about, but I guess I wouldn't be here asking for help if i did.

 

XP really won't run well on 128MB of RAM, you need to at least double that.


Also, if you installed XP on top of ME you're just asking for trouble, a clean install would be a better idea:

This is a-jay's housemate. This is whats happening:
We can connect to our isp (optusnet) fine. I am currently using the same account on my own pc and have no issues.
We are running off a 56k line, both on xp. He can access kazaa but cannot get http or ftp service off either ie5.5 or mozilla. When he tries to access a web page he gets the windows "the page cannot be displayed" page. The problem is that no bites are sent or recieved: his computer does not appear to be even asking the isp's server.

The computer has no issues with performance: its runnng the os fine.

That's what my housemate wanted to do origionaly. I was saving that option as a lastresort. Looks like that's the plan then. Will have to get my hub and nw cable from my mum's place and put all my files on his computer. And I won't put norton back on just yet.....

Definitely the best way to go, putting XP on a faulty OS wont fix it just upgrade your crappy OS to a more crappy OS

Couple of things is the XP cd you got the full version and not some OEM disc which doesnt have all the files on
Or is it a upgrade disc in which case you will need a copy of a previous version to put in when prompted to prove eligibility for the upgrade

Make sure you have all your hardware drivers for XP available including sound card could be one of the reasons for the crappy sound

And make sure you get all your windows updates as soon as is possible,unfortunately this may take you a while on a 56k

 

This may sound silly but, as I have one system with Win Me on it, I know it can happen. The list of programs displayed in Add/Remove Programs on Win Me is a single spaced black text on a gray background......... not exactly conducive to finding what you're looking for. So, just make sure that when you look at the list of programs in Add/Remove Programs that you check under M for Microsoft rather than I for Internet Explorer.

I only mention this because I know of several instances when just this very thing has happened.

Ok, aften numerous problems, I have now formated my computer. I tried to instal XP but although it was a full version, XP pro, it wouldn't instal from DOS. So I tried putting ME back on clean and that worked, so I'm happy with that for now.
New problem. My modom came with the computer but I can't find a driver for it on any of the discs that came with. I'm going to contact the place I got it from today, to see if they can help, otherwise I may have to spring for a new modem. I'm hoping to get cable soon anyway

Current status

Ok, since formating and installing ME clean because i couldn't intal XP from DOS, i have instaled XP back over ME. It seems to be running fine. I still have a problem with the sound when playing The Sims, but i have written to EA Support so hopefuly they can help me sort that out. Other than that, and loosing sone Mp3s in the process, it seems to be all good. Thanx for the help guys! And if I need help with anything in the future, i know where to come.
