Unable to install Avg after Win XpPro re-activation.

I've been unable to find a similar problem noted in the forum

About a month ago i helped a friend John set up his Win XpPro computer.
A few years old, just got it back from repairer.
Hooked it up to internet via ethernet cable to a Bigpond DSL modem being
used by another computer also via ethernet ( Running Vista ).
    John's a Pc newbie.

    About a month age....
I Installed Avg - antivirus. I updated Avg via internet.
Also installed Mozilla, Winrar, Winzip, etc.
Also installed Pegasus [ for email ] and some other specialist music software
Gave some basic instruction in Pegasus etc, then left him to his own advises.

They had a problem with the colours on the display( monitor being used),
    so they swapped around monitors.
    required actually replacing the monitor,
    Katrina had 'reactivated' windows XPpro.
    by re-entering a new 16 ? digit product code.
She said she had not entered an admisitrator password.

I'm not sure what else was done but the reactivation process
apparent killed Avg & the other programs.

I tried to re-install AVG version 11 from an old copy in the D:[munchies]
drive. It didn't work - got error 998 : memory location not found [ or
    something like that]

Tried rebooting into safe mode, but the 'Administrator' User required a password.

also tried to [separately ] start the windows firewall service,
but it wouldn't start, a similar error occurred .
error 998 : memory location not found
from memory this was in the event log

I assume both failed because now the computer wasn't connecting to the internet.

    maybe a drivers issue ?
    Or security ?
    profiles ?

Any pointers before i go there again next week.

I'll try sfc/scannow in an attempt to recover.

    I hope to avoid a complete format C: & re-install

Hi Ian C and welcome to MG's,

Try using ntpasswd to remove the admin password for safemode.....

    http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/

make a bootable cd with this.....

    http://majorgeeks.com/InfraRecorder_d6206.html

and boot the disc like as you would with an OS disc, this niffty little tool will remove all windows passwords.

Also I would reconsider installing AVG again as it has gone very bloaty and glitchy... I have just dumped it and I am now using Comodo Internet Security, and my system is loving it ;),it is very light on resources and is very good at its job!!!.......

    and it is free ;)

Ta iain.T for the heads up.

    downloaded 1st two suggestions.

i'll try them next time i get to John's hopefully, next weekend.

I'm using comodo [ registry cleaner ] on my win7 pc [ also running Avg ].
I've been a fan of Avg [ seems like 10years + ] with few probs, so i'm not
quite ready to dump it just yet.

I'm not sure if John's XpPro system cd is a full or OEM version.

But i've got a couple of XpPro system cd's that i could boot from.
I think only the original will work with sfc

again, ta for reply & i will post results when i get a chance.

Instead of using the ntpasswd ... first try this .....

1.Start > select run > in the run box type in "control userpasswords2" (without the "hyphons").
2.The User Accounts box will pop up, in there you need to uncheck the checkbox that says "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.":
3.Click the Advanced tab and uncheck "Require users to press Ctrl + Alt + Delete":
    4.Click OK

When the dialogue box pops up, type in your username and password (if you do not have a password, leave it blank)

Ta again iain.t for your response.

John phoned yesterday to say the monitor (on Xp machine) had carked it.
I bought a vivo? aoc 19" monitor for $190 a few years back for my 2nd pc & suggested he get an el cheapo from one of the warehouses - a 15" monitor should be pretty cheap.

So i can't do much until he gets a monitor and anyway the vista machine is working ok for inet & email etc.

I'l let you know when he does something about a monitor & i get another look,
