Yesterday I bought a used HP laptop, model xt512 from a guy who buys and restores computers. The monitor is unable to display red and we've determined it's a problem with the graphics or video card driver.
Went to HP tech support and via chat, downloaded and installed a driver but it didn't work. I called the guy who sold it to me, he told me which driver is being used and I resinstalled it from the HP download center. It is an ATI card (sp32048). When I tried to install it, it tells me components are missing and to make sure I have the required software or hardware.
I'm not sure what hardware or software it's looking for, can you help?

Its only red that will not display?

I'm skeptical that it is video driver related vs. hardware.

You can try removing the older drivers, then trying the new ones again.

    Post any exact error messages.

I wish I knew what it was! If it's not the driver, what sort of hardware are we talking about? I'm not really good at this stuff, lol.

When first speaking to HP support this morning, they were the first to suggest it was a driver issue. Then the guy who rebuilt the computer said it was a driver issue also... I also read this post here on MG, about the reds having dissappeared. Too bad the guy never posted if the advice solved his problem.

The guy who rebuilt the computer's now saying that it sounds like we have the wrong video card installed, seeing as it's unable to display all three colors at once, that finding the right one is a real pain. Great. I've searched the HP downloads, and can't even find any drivers for my model number.

I honestly have no idea about any of this. Thanks for your help!

This is really tricky... I looked at my screen properties, (right clicked on the windows background, went to properties; settings; advanced; adaptor) and it tells me the display adaptor is Mobility M6 (ATI, radeon mobility) and after checking the ATI website, searching the links in the drivers thread, found the correct driver for it (sp20678) which is different than what the guy had installed on it. Having installed a few things - windows installer 3.0 and .Net framework 2.0, I thought it was sure to work.
But now it's telling me the driver does not match the display adaptor. The display adaptor IS the Mobility M6 that my computer recognizes as the installed hardware, right? Why doesn't the designated driver match it? Please help!!!

hp pavilion notebook xt512 is all I'm coming up with - CRVSA-02T1-90 series (says on the bottom). The driver I'm looking for (not sure if it's the one currently installed) is 6.13.10.6071. I've considered that it has the wrong adapter installed, but it seems unlikely. No reason it shouldn't work on my computer or my system - Windows XP. Short of a factory restore (I'm told HP doesn't offer the disk), I'm afraid I'm out of options. Thankyou for your help!

Just posting for the sake of anyone else who may find useful... I found the driver version 6.13.10.6071 that correlates with the chip (checked the versions of the other drivers I've tried, including the one that was installed and they didn't match), paid the 2.99 to Driverguide and it installed perfectly. But the reds still do not show. Given that I know I have the right driver installed for the chip, I have to conclude that either my LCD monitor is unable to pick up reds, or the chip itself is faulty. Oh well, something to take care of come tax time.
    Thanks again for your help!
