Unable to open internet and word.

I've been having this probelm lately where my Internet (Internet Explorer) or Microsoft Word will not open right. When they do they freeze and I have to ctrl alt delete and end program. It's really frusturating, especially because i'm trying to do homework thats due tomorrow. Any advice would be very helpful, thank-you.
