A while ago, my old HD got screwed up and I had to install a new one. I had partitioned the old one in 2. The OS login was password protected. I slaved the old HD to the new one, and I can still access the first partition on it, but not the second. All the files are there to be seen in a their windows folder, but when i click on them they each give me an error saying "unable to open local file" or "unable to access local file". These are video files mainly.

I've been told that it is hopeless and I should just delete them and start that partition over, and I've also tried "reclaiming ownership" through the Microsoft help page. Friends say that once you have pw protected access as I did when my OS ran off the old drive (was C and D, now is D & E, with os on new HD, which is C now, of course), since that version of XP is no longer running the show, I cannot access that drive again (unless I boot through it, which is impossible). True or no? Help please. There must be a way to access them. Can't burn onto disk either.

I have the "computer name", login, and PW the same on my new OS as was on the old one, which was also suggested as a possible solution. Nope. :banghead

Rather than clicking on the files, can you right-click and choose to copy them somewhere else? Try this with one file and then see if you can open the copy.

When I try to copy any file it says:

"Cannot copy (file):Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."

I did not ever encrypt these files. The only pw to get to them came from logging into windows on the old HD. The tech guy (who basically helped me get out of one mess and into this one) never successfully "cloned" my drive. Does that matter? That's why I got a new HD, because he couldn't get that stuff out before trying to reformat the drive.

Are you guys sure it's not something I can fix in the bios or something? I don't know much about that part of comps. I should have gotten that guy to come back and fix everything but he was here most of the day and I just didn't want him touching my comp again. I've just lived with that inaccessible drive since then. I will look into some more recovery tools, but the ones I've tried have not worked.

    Thanks!
