My desktop is unable to renew my IP address. The icon states that there is little or no connectivity, yet everything appears to be working fine. I've tried to repair and also to the cmd route to release and renew, but it doesn't work. I'm connected to DSL through ATT and an ethernet.

What OS and what is the error?

XP, the icon in the lower right reads
    Local Area Connection
    Speed:100 Mbps
    Status: Limited or no connectivity

when I click on it and try to repair the problem it states that it could not renew my IP address.

Oh gawd, I've been putting up with this one all weekend.
For us, it meant the router was down, and unable to act as a DHCP server. We have a switch between the router and the computers, so it gave a superficial "limited connectivity" message, just the same as yours.

We'll have to look at your router (or whatever else is acting as your DHCP server). Assuming it is your router, can you post the make and model? Have you tried power cycling it? (ie, unplug it for 30s, plug it back in)

As a workaround you ~*may*~ be able to get it working by setting your IP manually
