Hi, I have an Acer Aspire 5542G with W7 on, which I want to restore back to factory settings.
Because of a virus infection someone put another version of W7 on for me a while ago, but I am having some problems with it and wish to restore back to Acer factory settings.
I have 3 recovery discs which I created when I got the laptop, but when I try to recover I have had a message saying "fail to format disk 0 partition 2" [I think it also gave the same message for partition 1].
Something seems to have created a 'system reserved G' of 100mb. This has just appeared under 'computer' alongside local disc C.
    Can anyone help please?

When you insert the recovery discs, do you get the option of reformatting/deleting partitions of the hard disk drive?

    Hi, thanks for the reply.

When I put the disc in it doesn't 'auto-run', it just shows what files are on it.
I have tried to run the one which says Recover7 which is the only 'application file'.
It goes to choice of language...then choice of a] complete restore or b] restore OS and retian data. If I continue on it goes to "fail to format disk 0 partition 2.
    Files on the disc are:-
    BOOT
    EFI
    IMAGES
    PATCH
    SOURCES
    BOOTMGR
    RCD.DAT
    RECOVER7
    RESTORE.DAT
    SYSTEMCD.DAT
    WIMGAPI.DLL

    Hi,

You want to boot the computer from that disc not run it from inside Windows.

Put the disc in the tray and reboot the computer see if the computer will load up the recovery instead of Windows.

You may have to hit F12 during the Acer screen to choose to boot from CD but most computers will automatically boot from CD if it is a bootable disc.

Hi, I booted from disc 1 as suggested and it started the restore process.

However, half way through disc 2 the computer just turned off. It was on mains power. The power supply has been checked and it is fine.

The laptop is totally dead! :cry:cry:cry

You should be able to restart the restore process. All the information is contained on those discs.

Are you saying you don't even get the Acer screen? The restore process only changes the Windows software it does not effect the Acer screen.

Hi, there is nothing at all.
It just switched off totally during disc 2.
The power cord is fine (been checked with a multimeter and showed 19.1 volts) and the battery is charged.
There is just no response at all from the laptop.

I really don't think that can be related to the recovery process. The recovery process just wipes the HD it has no access to basic power functions.

Try removing battery and unplugging it, then hold the power button in for 30 seconds. Plug it in, without the battery and see if it powers up. If not try starting it with both battery and AC power.

WOW you genius you! I have power back! :-

My screen says W failed to start. A hardware or software change may be the problem. To fix it:-
1 insert W installation disc and restart comp.
    2 choose language
    3 click 'repair comp'.

    Status 0x000000f

Info: The boot selecton failed because a required device is inaccessible.

What exactly should I do now?

My guess is you now have an incomplete Windows installation. I think the best bet would be to try the recovery again starting with Disc 1 and see if you have better luck or if it quits at the same place and in the same way. It may have just been a fluke.

    Thanks.
I've managed to persuade it to start again, so fingers crossed!

I have a gateway laptop and am having trouble recovering the system to factory settings. When I run the recovery disk, I get the message:
Fail to format disk 0 partition 3
I tried running an AVG bootable CD to diagnose the recovery issues, but the laptop does not run the disk and instead gives the error msg:
    BOOTMGR is missing
    Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Can anyone help me with this problem -- many thanks in advance.

    Hi,

Hi Kourosh, welcome to the forum.

Please make a new thread to describe your problem (New Thread button is on top left when you enter the Software forum). Is your Win7 32bit or 64bit?

Do you think the restore process started at all? Was the bootmgr is missing the reason you tried to restore or is that new after trying the restore?

Thanks Sach2 -- I copied it as a new thread. I was getting the blue screen when I would turn on the laptop and wanted to restore it to factory settings -- then started getting the Boortmgr missing error when tried to recover from HDD, so ordered recovery disks from Gateway/Acer, but when try to run these I get the format disk error.
