G'day all hoping someone can help me sort this issue out.
i have been trying to run the error check function on my computer but i keep getting the same error " CANNOT OPEN VOLUME FOR DIRECT ACCESS " I have googled this error and some of the suggest point to windows updates and suggest to install the latest service pack to which i have already done.I have windows xp home addition with sp3 and automatic updates switched on. Other suggestions point to software but i don't have any of the suggested software which may cause this problem.i am using AVG 8.5 with Zone Alarm pro as my firewall. If anyone has any suggestions as to how to correct this issue it would be greatly appreciated Thanx in advance.

can you temporarily disable avg and zone alarm then try it?

still no go' i shut down zone alarm and disable the resident shield in AVG this didn't help 'i also tried to enter via safe mode but the computer seemed to hang at the stage for loading the drivers and would not go past this point.

    np iwunderdownunder,

if it were me, i'd temporarily uninstall ZA completely.
    reboot
invoke chkdsk again, if no go, hit
    start/run type in msconfig, ok
click the services tab, disable all
click the startup tab, disable all
    reboot
invoke chkdsk again and see how you go.

G'day all just a heads up on how things are panning out.tried disabling zone alarm in services panel also avg and i disabled my email checking program but still no go.
went into run typed cmd at the prompt typed chkdsk the program ran and found errors in the volume it suggested to type chkdsk/r which i followed the prompts and restarted the computer to no avail.will now do as suggested and uninstall zone alarm and see if this will work. thanx to all for your assistance will let you know how it goes.

well i uninstalled zone alarm and tried the chkdsk function and still got the same error.so i used msconfig and disabled all services and startup programs restarted the computer and tried to run check disk again but still getting the old cannot open the volume for direct access error, got me stumped, i think i might put this in the to hard basket and wait till something more serious happens and try a repair install unless someone can come up with something else to try.once again thanx for you advice people
