G,Day, I hope you can help me. We have 2 computers and one printer. We wanted both computers to be able to use the one printer and tried to hook up both computers to the printer by using a USB double adapter. I accidentally plugged the USB from the main computer into the second one and now we have this problem. We have removed the USB adaptor but are left with this problem as described below.
Details for the computer which doesn't work now is:
    AMIBIOS Released 12/12/2000
    Pentium 3
    866 Mhz
    128 MB
    AMIBIOS AP61 9483
What Happens: When we try to start the computer now a screen saying "We apologise for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or softwaree change may have caused this.......etc etc" comes up
Then it gives you a choice of:
    Safe mode
    Safe mode with networking
    Safe mode with command prompt
    Last known good configuration
Start windows normally in 30 seconds

Any of these that we press seems to load windows. We then receive a windows XP screen for about 6 seconds and then it turns off and then back on again. It seems to follow this cycle time after time.
We tried pressing F8 at startup and disabled in BIOS the memory option of caching but this made no difference to anything.
We then pressed the F8 for the blue screen and a message shows:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
    UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop Error Screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need. If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as Caching or Shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advance Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

    Thanks Sach2,
I do have the installation CD and i've tried to boot the computer a number of times I also changed the settings in BIOS To allow the CD to boot first but the computer does'nt seem to recognize it and just continues in the same cycle.
    Thanks Real Geek,
Ive also tried "last good configuration" the computer appears to load after 30 seconds, then windows XP front page appears for about 5 seconds then closes and restarts the same cycle? Also the keyboard works in BIOS but not anywhere else? Is there any other ways to get the computer to recognize the installation CD?

What type of keyboard are you using USB or PS/2 (round connector)? If you have a PS/2 that would probably be best for universal recognition.

I guess you could try downloading a copy of a bootable recovery console ISO and burn that to CD with ImgBurn and selecting the Write Image File to Disc option. See if that CD boots and then try the chkdisk /r command.

Or if you are still having problems getting the disc to boot you could try connecting the faulty HD to your other computer as a second(slave) HD and run the checkdsk command form there.

I would troubleshoot the keyboard first. When you are on the advanced start up page(F8) can you move down the list of options using the keyboard?
