Hi everyone, new in this forum!!

Anyway straight to the topic. Below is the problem:

A customer of mine bought a D-Link DWA110 wireless adapter, and then said that she was unable to connect to her router. When she brought her laptop in, I tried connecting to the public wireless, and it worked. I thought it was an adapter so I changed a new one for her.

But it was still the same.

The next thing I tried was to connect to the wireless of my shop. It didn't work. It would only successfully connect to the public wireless.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Edit:
I forgot to include that her roommates could connect to the router at home. It was only her laptop that could not connect.

    Thanks a lot!

Well, here's an idea a bit out of left field, but then, it looks like a left field problem.
Could it be that both at her home and at the shop, the maximum number of IP addresses has been reached?

Also, it may be a firewall problem (blocking certain sites). You could ask her to disable her firewall, and if it then works, she probably needs to adjust her firewall settings.

Also ask her to try her adapter in other people's computers, and other people's adapters in her computer. See what works.

She could also try an ethernet or USB connection, just to check if it's a wireless problem.

BTW, she wouldn't have a built in adapter by any chance?

I've closed and disabled all Windows firewalls. The only antivirus running is Avast. And even before I installed Avast (the computer didnt have any antivirus), its the same thing.

Hmm...I don't really understand the part of maximum IP Addresses reached?

I have yet to test the adapters on other computers. But I will do it soon.

As for ethernet connection, it works. I am using the laptop to type this now via the ethernet cable. So cable connection is ok.

And yeah, the built in adapter is dead. =S That was why she bought the DWA110 adapter.

I'll go try out the adapter on other computers now. Thanks for your advice GCWesq!:cool

In the meantime, here's another left-fielder.
You might try connecting to the public wireless without the adapter in. I'm just wondering if the on-board adapter is really cactus, or if it just seems to be (because it won't connect at home), but there's actually something else going on.

IP addresses are assigned to each computer on a network. There are usually a couple of hundred available, but on some systems you can limit the number as a security measure. It stops anyone else getting access to your network. So if you have 5 users, you set the number to 5. Then, if a 6th person tries to connect, it won't let them. You have to increase the number if you want to allow it. Your router/modem manual should tell you how to do this, if it's possible. You will probably have to go to an IP website. Mine's at 10.0.0.138. Look for 'DHCP range' and the like.

Hi guys, thanks for all the help. The problem is solved. Turns out it was the adapter giving problems.

Its weird though, the adapter worked perfectly on my computer. And even after I formatted her laptop (Fujitsu), the adapter still wouldn't work!! So I took another brand of adapter (Corega, heard of it?) of the shelf and plugged it in, and it works fine!

The DWA110 was not faulty as it can be used on another computer. So I thought it was pretty weird.
