Hi. TY plodr for answering. i will postpone changing AVG for a little longer. To answer your 1st question. I get no error when I go to Win Update. I just get the Microsoft Update page but it is blank the page freezes before anything can load up and when I click on the X top right hand corner nothing happens. I have to use CTRL+ALT+DEL to get rid of the page. May I say that my ADD/REMOVE in Control Panel is also blank and freezes. In 2nd question are you asking me to check history on Microsoft Windows Update page I cannot do this as the page will not load. Thank you again. Boneyeye

    What are the System Specs?
    CPU?
    RAM?
    Page File?
Different OS's have different requirements. What works OK for 98 may be borderline for 2000.

Was 2000 successfully installed but you can't get to Windows Update?
Or was it unable to install fully?
What type of 2000 disk?(Full retail, OEM, or upgrade)?
Checked minimum requirements for 2000 and should be OK in that department.

Was 2K a clean install? I ask because as far as I'm aware there is not a direct upgrade from ME to 2K. If you "upgraded" that might be why 2K is acting wonky.
I had 2K and ME installed on an HP notebook but I used partition magic and did a clean install of 2K to its own partition.
Can you get to the catalog page?
    Code:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/Browse.aspx?displaylang=en&productID=38DF6AB1-13D4-409C-966D-CBE61F040027
then in the dropdown box select windows 2000 and you can see all the updates. You can doubleclick on the Released column and it will sort from the latest (December 2009) to the oldest. You do not want to download all of them - look for anything marked critical or security. If you are not sure, google the kb after the download title to see what it does.

Also: does 2K have SP4 and rollup #1 installed? I'm not sure if the update site will work if 2K is not at this level.

I think you have a problem with .net framework that windows updater needs.

    Try installing that first.

Having said that what updates do you need?
