    Greetings Honorable Geeks:major

    Have not been able to update the 'Windows Update for a few weeks" (I perform manually). After MS runs the scann error code Ox800042D appears.

    My attempts to repair are as follows:

    a) this error code when researched pertained to Internet conenction, my is 'obviously' fine.
    b) Emailed the MS support team for and advised to run a utility which downloaded my files to them.
    c) 24 hours later rec'd and email from a MS cust srv person who stated it appeard my 'Temp files may be corrupted'. Then provided a list of changes to make in order to correct' - which looked overly involved. (instructions provided listed below..... (before you make a comment - see my last note underneath)...

    Step 2: Rename the Windows Update Softwaredistribution folder
    =================================================
    One possible cause is that Windows Update's temporary folder contains corrupted files. This step will clean its "Download", which contains the Windows Update downloaded update installation files. After renaming this folder, all the files will be automatically recreated, except the Windows Update History data and downloaded updates' installation files. This will have no negative effect on your computer's performance.

    1. Click "Start", "Run", type: "cmd" (without quotations) and press "Enter". In the command window, type "net stop WuAuServ" (without quotations) and press "Enter".

    2. Click "Start", "Run", type: "%windir%" (without quotations) and press "Enter".

    3. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder and choose "Rename", type SDOLD as the new name.

    4. Click "Start", "Run", type: "cmd" (without quotations) and press "Enter". In the command window, type "net start WuAuServ" (without quotations) and press "Enter".

    ==========================================

    I then attempted to email this MS Cust Srv Rep back, when....I received a MS Security warning that the security certificate site for this email was no suppored by MS and threatening. :eek

    I then copied this persons email, sent email and... never rec'd a response back.

    Ok...... 2 questions: a) how do I fix this (tried IObit toolbox - no go). And
    b) sounds fishy
    ?

    Please advise and thank you :)

    This isn't your error but method 2 looks like the same steps
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934562
    scroll down to method 3 for links to windows update problems.
    You also failed to mention what version of windows you are running.
    When you click Microsoft or Windows update, what address is in the bar?

    Good Evening Plodr:

    Success :). I read you link, and the compared notes from the MS support rep. I ran successfully. In fact downloaded the 'MS Malicious Tools' program, which was an update.

    Thank you again! As always....":major Geeks Save the day"
