I have an HP 500–336. I have attached some information about the computer and the motherboard.

I have this installed as my main hard drive & I put the manufacturers drive as a backup drive:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018X8LB2G/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

the problem I'm having is I don't seem to be able to upgrade the RAM and the video card and have the computer function long-term (or even boot) with those upgrades.

The video cards that I have tried are:
    Msi R7 240 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127765
Visiontek Radeon RX 550 Graphic Card 110 GHz Core 118 GHz Boost Clock 2 GB GDDR5

The RAM that I have tried:
    XPG ADATA AX3U16000C4G11-SD DDR 1600 2X4GB
    PNY Performance 16GB (2PK 8GB) 1.6GHz DDR3 1x8GB and 2x8GB

I haven't owned all these parts at the same time so I haven't tried every combination of the hardware upgrades listed above. But we seem to have established a pattern of hard drive and RAM upgrade at the same time not working.

what is mostly happened is that when I turn the power on I see the case fan and the processor fan turn off and on in in tandem with the power light turning off-and-on it. it seems as though it'll cycle like that infinitely. Although I haven't let it carry-on for more than 20 seconds or so.

one time I did get the computer to boot with the R7 240 and the PNY ram. The computer seem to be running fine although in that particular instance I only had the computer on for about three minutes (it was just a quick test before I had to head out the door).

I touched on this a bit in another thread but the other thread was primarily focused on other issues I was having which have now been cleared so I decided to start this new threat to focus on the matters at hand.

I assume you are on x64bit, and either W8.1, or, W10.
The ram is unbuffered - so with x64 Windows, should run- BUT, some motherboards can be so fussy- If you tried one stick of these at a time- did it run o.k ? if YOU DID NOT , TRY THAT. The only other thing is the voltage the ram needs/use- 1.5v- is that in line with maanufacturers ?
    Same with video cards
PSU- FROM A BUYER OF THAT CARD 300WATT----f your power supply only peaks to 300 watts, you may run into slower performance issues due to insufficient wattage. 400w is best, but 325-350w would be safe enough.
So, my thoughts are too much power draw on the psu- Might be worth upgrading the power supply.
You may find others can give you more information on this, if you wait for more replies

I did get a new power supply at one point. I was trying to address another issue at the time. However I think I did try putting the XPG ADATA RAM in the computer when I had that new power supply. perhaps I do need a bit of a bigger power supply. However am pretty confident that the power supply is not the issue in this case. The reason I say that is because Ram has very low power usage. Also, Visiontek Radeon RX 550 didn't seem to have any problems and that's gotta have higher power usage than the R7 240, more than enough to offset a little more power usage by the ram.

one thing that's annoying is that the motherboard manufacturer doesn't seem to publish detailed information such as what kind of RAM to use. It seems as though HP expects you to go to the HP website and do an "upgrade search." but, that doesn't provide great detail unless there's things that you should just assume. This latest RAM that I got, PNY performance I do see is 1.5 V and it is unbuffered. I think I remember there being another specification something like ECM or EEM on some RAM that I was looking at so maybe I can research more about the PNY performance RAM, ECM or EEM specifications.

Edit: Yes, I did try with just 1 8GB Ram chip. I didn't try with just 1 4GB chip, though (because that basically wouldn't be an upgrade). If you are concerned about the power supply, I can unplug the 2nd hard drive (it's not an SSD) as I'd image that uses a lot more power than basically 1 ram chip.
