Many laptops with Intel processors have 'SpeedStep' technology (they may have renamed it) where the CPU is clocked based on need. So if the laptop is idle or the load is pretty light, the CPU is 'clocked down' to conserve the battery and lighten the power draw. As more work is done on the PC, the CPU is gradually 'clocked up' as needed. Most laptops will have a 'switch' in the BIOS where SpeedStep can be disabled or enabled. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it too much, especially if you use the laptop unplugged and on the battery a lot.

(I'm pretty sure that the term "SpeedStep" is the older name; I think Intel has released a new version of the technology but I can't remember the new name, or if there really is a new name :-o )

That's what I was thinking but it takes almost 10 min to load xp from power on to the welcome screen....... that's a red flag for me

:confused Im going to try booting a live cd and see if its a windows thing or if its hardware
