    Hello ^^

K, apparently I’m a newbie, so I apologise if someone has already asked this. I want to underclock my CPU... and I don’t know exactly how to do it.

    Here’s my specs

    Okay, It’s a Pentium 4 2.4Ghz
    ECS 848P-A (Deluxe)
    Samsung PC2700 768mb DDR Ram
    Ati Radeon 9600 pro 128

    Bios type: Award
Award Bios type: Phoenix – AwardBios v6.00PG
    Award Bios message: 848P-A Ver 2.2a 06/09/2004
    System Bios date: 06/09/04
    Video bios date: 04/09/08

If you need any more info let me know. Thanks.

Welcome to MG,I'll ask the obvious question,WHY?

My fans do too much work, gets too loud, and I think it would help if my CPU was turned down a notch. I realise some look at this and think, "OMG, underclock"... but I just want to try it to see if it helps with heat.

Forget it, I'm going to take it in and have a pro fix the problem. I talked to a tech and he basically said I probably need a new fan, or he said I could go with water cooling.

    Thanks for the help. Ciao.

Forget the watercooling - unless you're going to overclock in large amounts...

Just get a new quiet CPU Fan and some quieter case fans, that should do the job.

The following makes two of us:

I'm quite a newbe too in terms of hardware. I seem to have quite the same problem with michael. I have a similar motherboard
"Asus P4R800-V Deluxe 9100IGP Socket 478 ATX Motherboard", a 2.6GHz Celeron and Award BIOS, I think the same version as michael.
I really find the noise to be a major problem for me, for example there are times I would like to sleep and let the PC on, and I would do it much more easily if it was noiseless.
It is also a "moral" question too: There are many times, when for example I'm typing a simple text, I don't need all this "horsepower". Why should I consume all that energy on pointless CPU looping?
But the first problem is the major. I don't find the cooling systems very attractive, for example at the present I lack the money and I would prefer giving it for buying something good, than trying to cool down a monster that could simply be told to slow down and heat less. And even if you have a silent cooling system, all that heat goes out in the room and gets me really pissed off when it's summer (I live in Greece).

I don't know if I have persuaded anyone that underclocking is useful. Personally I liked the good-old turbo button. A nice idea would be to connect the turbo button with a switch that would also turn the fan on-off...

Any idea how to underclock? The bios supports overclocking: it lets you specify a speed of 100 to 266 Mhz (with accuracy of 1 Mhz) and then multiplies it by 26. For example: 100Mhz*26 = 2,6GHz which is the default speed for my processor.
I would really love being able to hack this to make it go below 100. Any ideas?

A cpu kind of automatically underclocks itself, when you dont use it it gives off very little heat, when you use it,it gives off more,so in turn your fans speed up,the best way to go about making it quieter is to install some quiet fans a quiet cpu heatsink. :)
