Underground garage sunroof?

The underground garage's ceiling has been crumbling due to leaks. Last year management of our condo had part of it fixed and we thought it would be the end of it. It took all summer and fall to have that part fixed. We couldn't be outside on our patio all summer.

We all got a letter from management that further repairs needed to be done on the garage and that it would take 2 months this time. It's a BIGGIE allright!! On April 10 they started drilling and that has been almost non-stop to-date. We're living only some 20 feet from this and the noise of drilling is from 7:45 AM until 17:45 PM except for their breaks. It's driving us nuts!! From what I see, it's definitely going to be all summer and fall again, if not more.

I know what you all are going to say. Well, going out for me is almost impossible due to physical problems, one of them having hyperacusis. (severe sound sensitivity) Earplugs help only a bit and hurt after having them in for a few hours.

Prior to last year, they repaired over some years all our patios, (drilling and putting new concrete slabs) rebuild balconies, repaired the roof etc. Of course, all this work during the summer and fall. :cry :cry

They had to remove beautiful trees, an island, grass etc. to do all this current work.

Oh...... I want to stop it so very badly, but have to choice to hear all that noise. :banghead :banghead

The building is getting old and so are we I guess.

End of rant!! That feels a bit better now. See the pics.

Sorry for you, oma. Looks like a nightmare situation. Ain't that a bitch?
No chance of moving in with friends or kin while the work goes on?

Thanks JOTS! Big sigh of relief when the drilling stops for a bit and after 6 PM. When they drill with aid of a Bobcat it's even worse.

My daughter lives in another city and can't go there because I need to see the docs fairly often.

Our friends live in condo's and apartments (cramped spaces) so I don't want to impose on them due to my physical problems as well.

    :( *hugs*

Oma, that sounds absolutely dreadful. I'd be ranting myself if that was going on for that long....and during the wonderful summer and fall months!

I wish I had some advice other than try to keep your sanity.

Thanks Laura. Your words mean plenty to me :) and yes am trying to keep my sanity because there's no alternative. :) I'm also thinking about the babies, pets and possible shift workers in this building.

I just wished that the bobcat would/could be used more often. The noise and tremors are hard to take however it would shorten the drilling time considerably. Today, bobcat and 3 drillers.

Oh, you poor thing, I will not complain about a bouncing basketball again. I can't imagine how awful that must be for you :(

Thanks darlene. A bouncing basket ball would sound like music to my ears right now. No other way but to go through it. Just heard that they will drill away until good/sound cement is found. Still quite a way to go. Must be this drilling that my blood pressure has gone way up. :-D

Someone just needs to toss in a few sticks of dynamite!!!!

Sure, that would just be DYNAMITE!! LOL You must be loving fireworks. :major

Thing is they want to save the pillars as they are still in good condition.

Last year's job did cost $180,000.00 CDN. This one is so much bigger and heard that additional repairs of a similar nature needs to be in the future when finances allow. See you next year spring with a similar rant. :-D

Ack! I hope you manage to find some peace and quiet, Oma, before you do your head in, (any further).

Thanks Phamton. At least the weekends and evenings are quiet to recoup a bit. :drool

    Update:
The good news: drilling has stopped after 2 months of it.

The not so good: Damage far more extensive than previously thought. A separate special assessment cheque to be written by all owners or additional 12 monthly payments. Work will take probably all summer and part of the fall with landscaping, pavement, island rebuilding etc.

Phase 3 of garage repair to come in the future. Possibly not next year :-D due to the cost of the current repair involved.

Thanks bigtrucks. That's only minor and temporary though compared to some other ongoing chronic stuff.

That's why I never tried to quit, knew I was destined for failure. That and since I had smoked since I was 12 I thought stopping surely would kill me. :-o

darlene, I smoked for about 50 years (started @16), quit numerous times but always restarted. Funny I thought the same like you for a long time. The longest time I did hold out was 9 months. So I'm not safe yet (a bit over 5 months now) and still craving a lot.

Update on the underground garage. See pics. Aaaarrrrrggggghhhhhh The mess started April 10, 2009 and still no asphalt yet. The 2nd pic is today's. They better put it in fast before the frost and snow hits.

Hi Oma! Good to see you again! I know it is hard, but you are on a ROLL ;) 5 Months is an accomplishment to be proud of, for sure.. ;) Yes, you still have a ways to go, but you are doing GREAT! :)

Yes, I hope they get the asphalt done too, before the bad weather... Hang in there. ;)

TeeCee, I appreciate your support and thank you for it. It ain't easy eh? I recall my previous attempts to quit for good weren't as difficult as this time around. Time has gone metric on me, a day used to feel like 24 hours, since May 23, it feels more like a 100 hours. :( ;)

Yep, I've been doing disappearing acts for some time now due to health reasons.

No way, your still having to deal with that? I thought it was fixed long ago. :(

    oma MajorGeek

Yes, still dealing with that crap. August 10 was the big day that the cement was poured for the partly new garage roof. It was supposed to have been finished, including landscaping in 2 months after that date. After them working the whole day today to get the surface flat and level, the weather man is predicting rain for tomorrow, so unless a miracle happens, no asphalt tomorrow and perhaps a repeat of what was done today. :-D
