Hi I have a refurbished HP from '08 that's just starting to freeze up a bit when I have too many programs open at once. (Windows 7)

Something I'm not sure I'm remembering right... that you have start up programs that run in the background you may not need that might make things run more smoothly? Also clearing out installed programs, is that just a space saving measure? 'Cause there is 7- gb free.

Is it just the programs in the task manager are that are the start up programs?
Do programs that are just installed have activity if they are not opened.?

In Windows 7 you should be able to see ALL processes that start at system boot, and disable or remove them in Windows Defender:
WINDOWS DEFENDER > Software Explorer > check the box at bottom that says 'show for all users'.
Security software is needed in start up - most others not.

The space on your hard drive should have at least 20% free.

If you cant see start ups in WD, then look at them in CCleaner Slim > Tools > Start up

Also run CCleaner > Cleaner at least weekly.

Looking in CCleaner there a bunch of tabs besides Windows which is a little confusing, 'cause doesn't everything run in windows?. Anything in here you think could be disabled or is a known problem?

    Windows start up tab:

    Yes HKCU:Run cdloader magicJack L.P.
Yes HKLM:Run avgnt Avira Operations GmbH & Co. KG
Yes HKLM:Run Avira SystrayStartTrigger Avira Operations GmbH & Co. KG

    Yes HKLM:Run IgfxTray Intel Corporation
    Yes HKLM:Run iTunesHelper Apple Inc.
    Yes HKLM:Run Persistence Intel Corporation

    FireFox Start tab:

Far bottom right of CCleaner > Tools > Start Up > Save to text file.

Apart from Avira in the first 'Windows' list I don't see any others needed in start up but you yourself must internet search with the exact '....exe' name for Persistence to see if online it says it must run. Any program can be started manually when needed.
The other lists are for you to make a judgement about and whether you want/need them where they are.

I can help with the list when I get home.A lot of the stuff can be set on manual for easy access. And so that it runs when you want it to.

I run windows 7 my self. And have not been infected by any virus or malware.
